Admiral of Fugues
I attended Christ Church St. Laurence's Advent Carol Service last night (Sunday evening).
The choir was brilliant, as normal and Peter Jewkes' organ playing wonderful, too.
Dr Neil McKwan's music choices were interesting to say the least, only knew one hymn!
Hymns:
1. O come, O come, Emmanuel! (the only one I really knew).
2. Come, thou Redeemer of the earth (Michael Praetorius)
3. People, look east. The time is near (Chris Steel d 1991)
4. Hills of the North, rejoice echoing songs arise. (Martin Shaw)
5. On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry (Charles Coffin/John Chandler)
6. Wake, O wake! with tidings thrilling the watchmen all the air are filling (Philipp Nicolai)
Other musical bits and pieces:
The lamentation - Edward Cuthbert Bairstow
Bogoroditsye Dyevo - Rachmaninov
There is no rose - John Joubert
E'en so Lord Jesus, Quickly come - Paul Manz
Magnificat in D - George Dyson
Peter then gave a very fine rendition of Bach's wonderful 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme' (see my Bach Chorales PDFs for the music).
Obviously all this glorious music was intersperesed with Seven Lessons and a Gospel reading by the Parish Priest. All the church was clothed in purple, though I understand the English Anglicans are nowadays adopting red for this time of year.
