'Kaiser-Waltz'
Op. 437 (1889)

According to Wikipedia -

This famous waltz was at first entitled 'Hand in Hand' and was intended as a toast made in August of that year by Austrian Emperor Franz Josef on his visit to the German Kaiser Wilhelm 2nd where it was symbolic as a 'toast of friendship' extended by Austria to Germany.

His astute publisher, Fritz Simrock, suggested an even more diplomatic title, 'Kaiser-Waltzer' since the title could allude to either monarch, and thus satisfy the vanity of both rulers. This magnificent new waltz was first performed in Berlin on 21st October 1889. The pomp and majesty of the work is demonstrated throughout. A quiet march starts the waltz's introduction before a sweeping crescendo heralds the gentle waltz principal melody. As more sections are introduced the mood remains constantly upbeat and triumphant. A violin solo near the end of the work is a touching melody of the first section before a trumpet fanfar ushers the end of the towering work, complete with drumroll on timpani and a strong brass flourish.

2nd video you posted is an insane performance.What energy and verve...I am yet to hear a better performance of that polka.Even C.Kleiber himself failed better this with his try in Vienna Philharmonic's 1992 New Year's Concert.

I have a friend in Hamburg, Germany, who once had coffee with Carlos Kleiber - when he presented him with a little piece of music, by me. Kleiber was polite. And hugely busy.

I admired Carlos Kleiber as soon as I heard his legendary recording of Beethoven's 7th Symphony and never stopped being amazed at his talents. He was without doubt one of the greatest conductors of all time.

People knew him always mention his politeness.He was a genius and without a doubt one of the greatest conductors ever.His three recordings of the 7th leave me stunned as well as his justly owned recording of Beethoven's fifth.

I have an extraordinary video in my collection which lasts 36 minutes of Kleiber (made in black and white) working with the Weber overture 'Der Freischutz' - entitled, 'Carlos Kleiber - In Rehearsal & In Concert'. Made in 1970.
