H. Heron 1730-1795

I've been trying to find some information about this composer since hearing his Voluntary Nº8 in G minor on a CD, Googling found me a youtube of voluntary Nº7 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dTrG32q3s-Q but nothing else, can anybody enlighten me, nationality, other works, recordings?

This is what I found on him.

Heron, Henry, musician and organist. He was organist at Ewell. Author of Parochial music corrected: plain and distinct rules for the more pleasing and correct performance of Psalmody, to which is added an easy introduction to singing, London, 1790. Composer of songs and ballads sung at Ranelagh Gardens [1765]; ten voluntaries for the organ or harpsichord [1770], etc.

The set has a lot more early English organ music so should keep me happy for some time.

I've used Selections before, usually good prices, they seem to have quite a lot of what looks like "end of line" or similar bargains

You may already be aware of it but some of Heron’s music is in a few music archives in the UK. For example, in the music manuscript collection of the British Library in London -

1. ‘All on the pleasant banks of the Tweed’, ‘I wish I’d ne’er had seen him’ - ‘A favourite Scotch song as sung by Mrs Weichsell at Vauxhall Gardens. Music by Mr H. Heron . Published by Skillern, London (c.1775).

2. In William Gawler’s ‘Harmonia Sacra’ (‘A collection of Psalm Tunes with Interludes and a Thorough Bass, to which are added an Introductory Voluntary, Anthems and Hymns', the words principally selected from Mr Merrick’s Palms etc. London (published in London 1781).

(Featured within Gawler's book is music by such composers as Blow, Croft, J. Clark, Allison, Wheall, Nare, Worgan, Soaper, S. Long, E.Gilding, H. Heron, Mussey and W. Riley etc.)

And - (as Janne has earlier indicated) -

3. In William Riley’s, ‘Parochial Music Corrected’ of 1762 (published in London that same year) are examples of music by Blow, Croft, J. Clark, R. Allison, W. Wheall, Nare, J. Worgan, J. Soaper, S. Long, E. Gilding, J. Baildon, T. Wood, J. Green Junr., S. Howard, J. Battishill, W. Selby, H. Heron, H. Duncalf, M. Hussey and W. Riley.)

I’ll check some other sources in the next few days. I’m not aware of any recordings or other publications at this time.

It appears that Heron was quite a distinguished and well known composer here in England and it would be fascinating to know more of him.

A little information (not much) on Henry Heron. This recently published book -

‘Henry Heron: Ten Voluntaries for the Organ or Harpsichord’ (London c.1765)

Little is known of Henry Heron beyond the details given in the title page of these voluntaries. He was organist of St Magnus, London Bridge by 1745 and seems to have stayed there until the appointment of his successor in 1795. The voluntaries were first published in 1760 in an edition 'published for the Author'. They were later reissued in the edition used here in about 1765. His other published works hint at further musical activities; they include volumes of songs for Marylebone and Vauxhall pleasure gardens and church music for the 'Orphans of the Asylum' and the 'Charity Schools in London and Westminster'.
