The Hymns of Charles and John Wesley

Evangelist John Wesley (1703-91) and his brother Charles Wesley (1707-1788) wrote thousands of hymns between them. (Charles himself is estimated to have written over 6,500 including ‘And Can It Be That I Should Gain?’,O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing," and ‘Hark! the Herald Angels Sing‘). John wrote fewer but even translated texts of hymns into English (mostly of German origin). (John began studying German language on board the ship ’Simmons’ which carried him and Charles to North America from England in 1735 because on board with him were dozens of German Moravian colonists).

Thank you for that Robert. I know they wrote many hymns, but I can never remember which ones.

Quite true - Interesting to note that our ELCA Lutheran hymnal contains more hymns by Wesley than those of Luther .

Beautiful hymn by a wonderful choir.

I have a Methodist hymn book full of their songs. Of all things they were
the founders of the Methodist Church. My preacher won't let a sunday
go by without us singing a Charles Wesley song. I have a favorite too.
Love Divine is one of them. Jesus Lover of my Soul is another one.

Hi there. Yes, many of these hymns are wonderful and are greatly loved. I'll add a few more soon.
