Good bye and So Long to Netscape

I was trying to re download Netscape when I found that they were closing
their navigator for good in February. I had a lot of good videos in there
on that browser. I have re downloaded foxfire again and it works this time.
What do you think?

Good choice, Judy, on selecting Firefox.

I hadn't heard about Netscape going away, but then I have not used Netscape in well over 3 years.

When you changeover to another browser, your saved bookmarks should follow ... I think they do anyway, as all of mine did when I switched from IE to Firefox.

Krummhorn's right, Judy. Just export from netscape and import to firefox. I didn't realize that netscape was even still around. Been using firefox for a while. I really hate IE. But you have your favourites saved on YouTube, don't you? I still can't get over how many vids you have viewed on YouTube!

My IE is okay as long as I want to use google. I just can't download a
video to this forum with IE. I have to use either Netscape or Fox fire
to do that.

Precisely why I totally abandoned IE awhile back ... nothing but headaches when downloading from sites. Worse when uploading to a site I lease for my large music files.

Amazing to know that Firefox has at least three times the security protection that IE will ever have, yet it doesn't choke on all those implementations like IE does. I only keep IE6 around for checking compatibility on a site where I am the webmaster. I removed IE7 completely several months ago. Good riddance.

I just hope this Windows 7 turns out all right. If I don't like it I guess I
can uninstall it. I'm going to give it a try. It's one of those touch the
screen programs.

Judy, do you use a download accelerator? Speedbit.com has one in the package with the video accelerator. It has a resume feature that is nice. I just don't like IE cuz it's MS. I don't like HAVING to use a certain product, I prefer a choice. I use incredimail, too cuz it's, well - incredible!

I don't use Firefox either because it's a pain in the kuester! The last time
I used firefox you tube kept telling me that it needed flash. I would install
flash and it still didn't work. I'm using something new that belongs to
Google. I'm using Google chrome and I like it so far. I can upload videos
on it a lot easier than IE or Firefox.

Cool ... whatever works best for you, Judy.

Don't know what that "flash" install is all about - I've never encountered that with FF when running youtube vids, but then again, 'flash' may have already been installed by some other application I use.

Good news about Google Chrome ... at least you found something that works for you.

I somehow found Firefox annoying. I suppose I should go back and give it another try. I have used IE all along with no great problems, though IE7 started to act a little flakey at times after the last update. Someone mentioned that a beta version of IE8 is now available. OK, I thought - why not? Thus far it seemes to be working well - though Yahoo warned me it was unsuported.

Ah well, like I said - it seems to be working OK. Have to read up on all the new features.

H Rob,

In regards to IE7, that's exactly when I started having problems when they did those latest updates almost a year ago ... IE7 was just, as you stated too flaky to continue using. I live under the old adage of "don't fix what ain't broke", and for me FF is performing like a well tuned Danish watch (can't say "Swiss" on a Danish forum ), so I'll keep it as it is.

I'm always a little skeptical in trying out beta versions ... I was an AOL Beta tester for many years (up until v9.0) and I know about bugs and what they can do to one's machine. Several low level reformats of my hard drive later, I gave up on beta's .

Nice to hear that IE8 seems to be working well for you. Hopefully they got all the quirky things that plagued IE7 out.

Have appreciated all the interesting responses having switched to FF about three or four years ago while keeping Netscape in reserve for emergencies - (which never happened). I, like many was turned off by Microsoft, though IE is in reserve too on the desktop since some service applications prefer automated updating through IE. Now Google offering Chome - but I'm not too keen on migrating to "The Cloud" even though I've also set up GMail as an alternative to Thunderbird - since it offers a couple of useful features.

Picassa, which I use with all its simple manipulative powers is in the Cloud too, but I keep self-updated duplicate photo files and parallel applications on the computer too - which I'll still have access to if I withdraw from Picassa at some point. Why would I do that? It's worth reading Google's legal stuff - which applies to everything one passes on to them - which resides in the Cloud. Even though you retain copyright Google has free rights to everything you send them - which they can use in any way they please - including commercial purposes. In addition, Google retains the right to alter your material as it so wishes.
Apple, on the other hand, is refraining totally from the Cloud concept in favor of computer-resident applications (more powerful and sophisticated in many cases that Cloud ones) and which remain totally under one's private control. Once you buy it there are no more fees - except perhaps for updates.

One can predict that before long, after most people have become dependent on Cloud services - use charges may well be introduced - despite parallel advertising revenue. This has already occurred in the case of some Cloud-based business applications.

No doubt, many of this thread's contributors know all this, so please forgive my seeming pedantic - and please correct any misunderstandings I may have.

This is all very useful info, dpurq ... thanks for sharing as you have enlightened me too in your knowledge of the Cloud. I would not want Google to take over rights to material that I had arranged or composed and posted on the internet ... that is so un-cool ... but if it's in their fine print, then the user can't say they weren't warned first.

I too keep IE on my desktop ... but it's IE6 with no revs ... strictly for back-up purposes should something happen to FF.

I use Firefox almost exclusively and IE only when I have to. Mostly I use Bing for searching or Google I look forward every morning to Bing's daily image, most are quite beautiful. I have downloaded some as a change of wallpaper. The latest version of firefox has Ask as a default browser, but I mostly ignore it.
