Fela Sowande(1905-1987),studied privately in the UK gaining FRCO,FTCL,B.A.Music(London).He was a wonderful organist, pianist, and composer. He came back to Nigeria in the 50's but again relocated to the U.S.in 1968 where a was greatly sought as a performer, teacher, and conductor. His organ compositions imbibed African musical tendencies, and are delightful, both to play, and hear.He was the first blackman to ever conduct an Orchestra. He died in the US at a ripe old age, leaving a sprawling estate in Ohio.
In the same vein Ayo Bankole(1935-1976),was a virtuoso organist and pianist, who composed very formidable music, even before his musical studies at the Guildhall School of Music,London and Cambridge University, both in the UK,and the UCLA in the US.He also gained FRCO aside B.A. and M.A.Music.He along with his wife(also a professional organist) were killed in tragic circumstances the same night by his half brother.
Both have inspired us-the present generation of Nigerian organist especially.I am curious to know if any member of the forum know about this two eminent Nigerian musicians, and if you have heard or played their compositions.I am particularly looking forward to record their outputs for the organ this year.
