    Villa-Lobos' Last Bachianas

I know that the fifth is always the most popular (just check youtube and you'll see how much it is!), but Villa-Lobos' last three Bachianas Brasileiras are those which I tend to resonate the most to because of their emotional intensity. He's a man of great passion who did not bother with contemporary schools of thought. He's also a composer who had a large audience constantly in mind, a "populist," so to speak.

The second movement of the 8th bachianas is particularly gripping in its momentum and intensity. And there's a restrained pathos in its principal melodic line which I find utterly irresistible. Perhaps something "New World" in its conception too.

All three last bachianas could easily have been called symphonies by US contemporary standards.
