Aloha GrandMaster Krummhorn,
And what a glorious acoustic too - I remember when seeing that Chapel building for the first time in person and I thought it hideously ugly. The inside, if one could visualise it being without any pews or organ console, I felt looked like a great marble sarcophagus. But, over the years my mind's eye has softened a bit on it. The College strove to build a non-denominational Chapel and they pretty much succeeded in doing so - even though the School is founded by leaders of an, by me, un-named mainline Church.
Cheers,

Not just the acoustics, but also the fact that all the pipework is in the ceiling (they speak through the big grill right above the pews). Organs sound better when they're higher up. In the case of Girard Chapel, even though the organ is tucked away in the ceiling, its all masonry and there's alot of breathing space up there, so this organ has a huge impact. It's one of my favorites.
I did a mini-recital on that instrument in the beginning of last year. It is one of my favorite instruments, as is the one in St. John the Divine in New York. Of course, then there is the Woolsey Hall gem Ohhh la-laAnd then the dream machines in St. Sulpice in Paris and St. Ouen in Rouen.

It's interesting how certain organs get their reputations, and that one at Girard seems to be a favorite for recordings. I wonder if that ceiling installations has something to do with it.
Actually, Girard is not a "college" at all -- its a boarding school for K-12 kids from low-income families.
