Google street view

I've just spent a while checking out this Google street view, coverage seems very patchy so far. In UK some major towns are covered, others not, Western Europe is about the same, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal, none in Germany, Switzerland or further east nor Scandinavia. USA at first looks well covered, but when you zoom in for a closer look there are a lot of gaps.

I looked at Tucson, seems well covered, but Madisonville only one road, Pennyrile Parkway, some coverage of a small place to the south, Earlington.

Australia and New Zealand about the same, no coverage yet of S. America, Africa, and the only bit of Asia covered is in Japan.

How to find if your area is covered, I have used UK/Western Europe map as an example, it works the same for other places. At the top left of the map is the zoom control. looks similar to a thermometer, at the top is a yellow man, if you click on him and drag him over the map, any areas covered by street view will be highlighted in Blue, zoom in and place the "yellow man cursor" on the street you want to view, you can use the mouse to move along the street or to "swing the camera round".

If when you zoom in the "yellow man cursor" goes white then you have moved outside the coverage area; in some areas only certain streets are covered, it soon becomes obvious which as no street view comes up.

London seems very well covered, I was able to see the house I was born in in Shepherd's Bush.

At least for the U. S., many cities are covered if you look under the city name. Sometimes the pictures seem not to be very relevant, but that's a Flickr trademark, it seems. Just try putting "ear of corn" into the search and see how many pictures you go through before you get to an ear of corn. And that seems to be the case with just about any "searching" on Flickr.

I realize you are talking about Google, which can also beat around the bush a lot of the time, but if it's pictures you want, you have to search a photo website.

You've got the wrong idea there, the Google Streeet View is tied into Google Maps, it's a step beyond the satellite view, it brings you down to street level as the name implies, nothing like flickr or Google galleries, this example is Trafalgar square London

Use the arows at top left to move the viewpoint side to side or up and down.

Mike - it's actually a picture of the back of the church, looking west. If you type 812 George Street, you might see it front on.

The name of my parish is: Dove of Peace Lutheran (ELCA). Its physical address is: 665 W Roller Coaster Rd, Tucson (AZ).

It shows up nicely in the Google street view.

Thanks guys, CT, must say the George street view is better; KH as you say, shows up well on the street view, quite a contrast between the two, CT's a more traditional bulding right in the middle of the city, KH's a modern looking building in plenty of space.

It looks as though they are working their way eastwards in Europe; Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and parts of Belgium, Holland and UK so far. I know UK is being worked on currently as I've seen reports on the google camear car in various parts of the country, but don't know how long it takes from the images being taken to when they have finally been put on line.

There seems to be little or no logic to the coverage, sometimes just the centre of a large covered and few suburbs or rural areas e.g. Manchester, whilst two or three hundred miles away smaller cities and a lot of surrounding rural areas covered, e.g. Norwich and Aberdeen.

Looks like we've got no choice but to be patient and wait. Google Earth has been working fine for me so far.
