It sure is pointless, but at least it has stifled serious debate for a while. Serious debate leads to uncivil tongues, personal attacks and people being banned from the forum. It's an absolute menace.

Well, in theory, they shouldn't, but yes, they often do. I enjoy reading a good debate, and occasionally participating in one, but pointless banter tends to be more fun.

Maybe one could inject a good debate with pointless banter?
