(I was stunned to discover my 16yo nephew who is very much into music and plays drums and keyboard had never even heard of "imagine". When I played it to him he raised his eyebrows as if to say my tastes were incomprehensible to him!)
As to whether JL is a hypocrite, you make a point with what you said. But I don't think so. He did say just to imagine, so... Or maybe he thought others should get rid of their possessions first.

The only thing I'd add to that (admittedly whilst in a flippant mood) is that there wasn't much else but the piano in that particular large ballroom. Also not forgetting that many rock stars of that generation were often told by their accountants to spend up big with their earnings for tax reasons. Many of them spent time out of the country for tax purposes too (Is that what was sometimes referred to as "tax exile"?) A system I've never understood being from the antipodes, but for which I am grateful since my most favourite Yes album was recorded by the group whilst in Switzerland during a "tax year").

They didn't actually get thrown out, but they got deportation papers slipped under their door, and there was an ensuing 'tug of war' between the gov't. and their lawyer that went on for a long time. Their phone was tapped, and they were followed (or stalked..) Scary stuff. Apparently Lennon was 'a big risk' to the gov't. what with his pesky peace preaching and all. Then Watergate brought a halt to all that illegal spying stuff... Hmm. He eventually got his green card, on the day his son Sean was born, which happened to be his birthday. That was a good day. Then later he got shot.
Ok, I left a lot of stuff out in my synopsis, but that's the general gist. They don't go into the shooting part much. Fascinating film. I'll post the link in case anyone's interested. It's about an hour and a half long.

Thank you for that John, it definately restored my peace and trannquility. i love that piece of music. I loved watching those Greeks, I was almost tempted to join in.
Trouble is this is the only greek exercise I am likely to see. Still it made me laugh.
