Oh, my goodness ... Gone Baroque my friend - I just LOVE this film. Loved the book, too (though you need a good "classical education" meaning Latin etc to really understand it fully, my Latin is VERY poor).

You are right David, the book was somewhat difficult to read (as are all of Umberto Eco's books), but it was a marvelous story and Eco does a fantastic job with his descriptions. One interesting aspect of the film; the role of the Venerable Jorge was played by the son of the great Russian Bass Fyodor Chaliapin.

@Rob, now that IS interesting. I actually thought the movie lived up to the book VERY well ... especially the labyrithine library, yes?

Definitely. It is one of the closest to the book films I have ever seen. It is unfortunate that it is not better known. I also think that it was very well cast. Each actor was just about perfect in his part. It is just that I loved Eco's writing so much. I recall one paragraph of description that I think ran three pages.

rob - yes - Eco's wordsmithing abilities are almost beyond belief. Speaking of books to films working so well. I've recently see Water for Elephants based on Sarah Gruen's novel Like Water for Elephants. Also an amazing adaptation.

As yet I have neither read the book nor seen the film. Must do so, but we have not gone to the movies much lately.
