Rachmaninoff 3rd Piano Concerto

I have found that the recording by Pletnev/Rostropovich is as close to perfection as one is likely to get. Over the years I have owned at least 20 versions and heard others as well. The CD also has the Prokofiev 3rd and is first class too.

Just wanted to say "Welcome to the forum" Smitty. I don't as yet have a recording of "Rach 3" so I'll bear your recommendation in mind.

Van Cliburn/Symphony of the Air/Kondrashin
Arcadi Volodos/Berlin Phil./Levine

All are superb performances.

My first exposure to the Rachmaninoff 3rd Piano Concerto was a recording by Lazar Berman & Abbado, back in the age of vinyl. Since then, I've also heard Rachmaninoff himself in an old mono recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Horowitz in the Carnegie Hall disc with Ormandy, and live performances by Garrick Ohlsson and Lang Lang.

However, my very favorite rendition of this is by Martha Argerich and Chailly. You don't have to just take my word for it... the "Gramophone Guide" has it on their '100 great recordings' list.

I have this CD on the proverbial "Desert Island' list.:)

I've only ever heard Yehudi M. play a brief excerpt of this, never heard the work in its entirity.
