• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Christmas Voluntary

Hi,
Is it too early in the year for me to ask for your suggestions for a good voluntary to play after a midnight mass service?.

I'm already booked up for two services this year - one at 9.45pm and the other at 11.30pm ... it's shaping up to be a busy Christmas for me!!!!

Suggestions of music that could be learned quickly would be gratefully received.

Thanks!

Boy there are a number of good pieces outthere: Here is a one that comes to mind: Noel Polonais ( variation on a Polish Christmas Carol ) By Alexander Guilmant alittle different. Many times I use the Hallelujah Chorus after the masses on Christmas Eve or an arrangement of one of the christmas hymns i.e. O Come all Ye Faithful, Joy To The World etc as there some very grand arrangements of them out there. I usually play full organ at the close of masses myself. even the Toccata from Gothic Suite or Widor's famous Toccata are good too.

There's a book collection of pieces by Diane Bish that I use each year in my church. I pretty much play the entire book for a prelude, saving one of the selections for the postlude.

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies.

jhnbrbr - WOW, what a piece. I don't think the Organ I'm playing on at Christmas has a big enough sound on the pedal to do that, but it's certainly one to try and learn.
As you said, probably not for this year, but there's always next!!!!!

wljmrbill and Krummhorn - do you have the ISBN numbers for any of these books / pieces so I can try and buy them?.

Krummhorn - are these original pieces by Bish? I'm aware that she has done some arrangements of hymns, etc., but didn't know she had written original stuff too.

Given the current hoopla at Coral Ridge church, maybe they need her back. Perfect example of what happens when the individual a church is wrapped around is out of the picture. Crystal Cathedral also seems to be having its problems.

I've long held that most of these televangelists are essentially dictators whom no one involved in the place dares to question. (Nor do they make a move without permission from "on high".) And of course, money-grubbing is their favorite activity.

But back to Bish -- she is no longer a kid, so maybe over time she has written some things that might be worth looking into.

I'll get that for you this weekend, as I store my entire music at the church where I play.

Jonesey: I grew up with Diane Bish in Kansas and had some of the same teachers. Try her " Joy Of Music " web site.. she has a number of books(18) and music available. Good Luck I know Unity Music Press and Gentry Publications have some of her books also. http://thejoyofmusic.org/index.aspx

hi
Would you like to try THAT ?
It has been performed a little too fast but you can play it slower. There are 5 variations of this music. I can give you the sheets music, just send me a private message.

A couple of suggestions:

God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen - Noel Rawsthorne

http://www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/music/1691

Good Christians, awake - Noel Rawsthorne

http://www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/music/1692

(Press the green play button on the page)

HauptwerkIII - was that you playing those pieces?, they sound great.
However, the link to buy the book isn't working ... do you have the book, and can you give me the ISBN number so I can order it?

Thanks!

UPDATE: I've found the book on the Kevin Mayhew site and ordered a copy - thanks again for the suggestions.

Hi Jonesey

Have you got my reply to your private message ?
The score is waiting for you.
I have made a new version, a little slower and more nice. Many passages have been rewritten and the recording is made with Hauptwerk III.

Here, you can listen to the MP3

Hi,

I've been away sick for a few days, so have just replied to you!.
Look forward to receiving it.

HauptwerkIII - thanks for the other link - I've got the book on order and paid £5 more, so not so bad. Hopefully it will be waiting for me tonight so I can do some practising this weekend.

Hi Jonesey
I hope you feel better.
What book are you speaking about ? If you mean the latest version of my score, do not buy anything, I'll send you for free the PDF file. Just give an e-mail address where to send it.
