Recruit, Pianissimo
Hi all!
My name is Rob. I would like to start by saying I am fan of many types of music, my favorites however are classical, jazz, rock and ambient. Favorite groups include the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beethoven, Mozart the list goes on.
Now to the reason I registered. I am considering learning an instrument. I have an acoustic guitar that I play with sometimes but never quite took the time take it seriously. Lately however I've been inspired to learn a keyboard instrument. I quite like the piano and organ.
I have a few questions regarding this, first, which would be a better instrument to start with between the piano and organ? Second, how much would I have to spend to acquire one of these instruments? Thirdly, how much time would be required to become proficient in playing the instrument?
To further emphasize on my goal, I found this video on YouTube of a cover of my favorite song by the Doors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_nfAaE7Rsw
How long and how much practice would be required to become that good at playing the piano?
Sorry for the long post, thanks for reading and thanks in advance to any comments and advice.

As an organist and also play piano: I would say overall piano is what you should go for as far as cost to obtain an instrument ( digal pianos are very resonable) and time to become proficient. However I have had students who have not had piano ( which I do not recommend) and they did quite well. Practice is the key for all instruments as well as a good teacher.. tutor etc. I would say no less than an hour aday ( 2-3 is even better).. Hard to say how long to become "Good" all depends on your talent and time practicing and advancing in technique.... But it is well worth your efforts.... Good Luck my friend.

Welcome to the forum Rob. I'm sure you will find it very rewarding to learn to play a keyboard instrument, but it's important to have realistic expectations and look upon it as a long-term project (maybe several years hard work to approach the standard in the video). Even so, if you're prepared to enjoy the journey and take pleasure in each accomplishment, it's something which will enrich your life. As Bill says, it's probably best to start with piano, unless you have a very strong preference for the organ.

Thanks for the warm welcomes, I'm feeling good vibes here. I am interested in a digital piano, can anyone suggest or recommend a good starter but of good quality?
Thanks again for all the nice comments.
Edit: Perhaps I should mention my budget, I don't want to spend over $400 CDN if possible, so probably used I imagine.
