Together with seven other participants, I had the luck of spending three days at an "organ academy" with Ben van Oosten in Waldsassen (Germany), a few weeks ago. There, I found out that he is not only a great musician (which I knew for a long time), but also a great teacher.

And a few times, he sat down on the organ bench himself to play part of whichever work one of the participants was presenting: the way he remains calm and utterly motionless (even when playing, say, the Intermezzo from Widor's 6th) are absolutely stunning. He simply pours all his expression into where it is supposed to be, namely, the music itself. Widor's motto “calme et grandeur” personified!

These sound nice, even on the computer. But I can't quite hack these "Youtubes" that just show pictures. Let's see the dude playing.

That's precisely the point of my previous post: with him, you wouldn't see more in a video than you would in a picture.

And those Widor's are an essential part of an organophile's collection...

    Just my $0.03 worth...

    Cheers,

Van Oosten does a very good job with the Widor symphonies, his is arguably the best "complete" recording around. I also enjoyed his Guilmant sonatas, but his Vierne symphonies suffer from poor sonics (great playing though).
