    Daniel Roth improvises in Rouen

A year or two ago, JAV published this CD of Daniel Roth playing at St-Ouen. It's a hybrid CD/SACD, but if, like me, you only have an ordinary CD player, you would be out of luck: the last few tracks (containing improvisations) are only present on the SACD layer.

The good news is that someone has now uploaded these onto Youtube:
    Enjoy!

Roth is one super organist. I sometimes wonder if he knows that organs also have soft stops -- he seems given to playing mostly "full tilt", but he sure can shake the rafters.

According to seemingly dependable authority, that organ, along with St. Sulpice and St. Sernin, are about the only ones left still pretty much in original Cavaille-Coll condition. It says something about craftsmanship that they still sound the way they do. And Roth can get the most out of them.

WOW! I'll never forget the privilege of standing next to Mr. Roth at St. Sulpice watching him improvise (not to mention being permitted to play the instrument afterwards!). Thanks ACC, these superb videos brought some of that back (although unfortunately, some of the audio clipped a little - but this could just be my soundcard)

Well, I guess then that it's about time you travel to Sunday mass at St-Sulpice to hear him improvise communion.

In the meantime, you can listen to him here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whRg6dN2GFE. What is probably true is that Roth playing softly is totally underrepresented on Youtube.

That is (fortunately) far from being the case.

Very interesting explanations of the tones of the C-Col.

I'm not sure if anyone has posted these clips on the forum before, but they show the maestro doing a similar demo at St Sulpice. There's also an explanation of why it was necessary to change the order of the manuals in 1903. Quite fascinating. I've always remembered a comment of Dame Gillian about playing this organ: "Colours, colours everywhere!" (And envy @ Soubasse!!)

Those Daniel Roth at St. Sulpice demos never fail to wow curious organ-philes. I'll be there come Christmas time...
