Werner Icking archive on line is [was] closed

I've just tried to access the Werner Icking Archives, and there is a brief note that it has been closed, so no more free scores from there. That will be a great loss if it should be permanent.

The message says they are investigating an alternative, but the present University server which has been handling it ws unable to continue with the amount of downloads.

Back to Google.

Lets hope they can get someone else to host it ... any site with PD shutting down is a great loss.

Just had a quick look at IMSLP, I see some of their scores are reproduced from WIMA, but not the one I was looking for! John Stanley Concerto for organ and strings Op2 No 2 in B minor. I downloaded the CD from Baroque Music club and wanted to follow on score.

Might be able to do the organ part on GrandeOrgue, probably need a hefty synth for the strings though!

Had a look at the forum attached to IMSLP, a hint that options are being considered. WIMA had sound samples as well as scores, do IMSLP include any sound files or purely scores? Could make sense for IMSLP to take over the WIMA archives, I note some of their scores originate from WIMA already.

I've not seen any sound samples on IMSLP ... at least on the pages I visit frequently. I'm assuming the whole site is dedicated to just scores.

Would be great if they would pick up the Werner Icking Archives though. There's a couple other PD sites ...

Mutopia doesn't appear to have much outside of the classical hit parade, and the search engine isn't that brilliant, has difficulty separating JS Bach from CPE Bach.

4 works by Buxtehude, 2 by Scarlatti, none by Purcell, Byrd, John Stanley, Jeremiah Clarke.

CPDL is better in terms of lesser known composers but concentrates on choral work, does have sound samples albeit electronic. Scores are in PDF or NWC, neither of which can be read by Finalé Notepad nor reader. There is a PDF to musicXML converter available ..... for $199!!!!!

That's what I liked about WIMA, Finalé readable scores, no need to faff about converting file formats.

Ahah, I see now, Mike. So, the Werner Icking site site had downloads compatible with Finalé?

Guess that's why I've used the CPDL site some as it's compatible with NWC, which is what I have been using for 6 years or so ... I can't yet justify the expense of getting Finalé or Sibelius when NWC meets all my present needs.

That converter seems rather pricey ... good gosh!

I'm only using Finalé Notepad and Reader which do all I want, i.e. generating a midi file to drive GrandOrgue. I'm now trying another approach, finding a way of capturing the sound samples from CPDL.

WIMA is back on line at the moment. looks like it could be permanent, new hosting and support.

Thought it was too good to stay buried for long.

Looks like they have some NWC files, and some other applications, and Midi files.

Glad to have this resource back online too. Since I use NWC exclusively as my notation program, I am always thrilled to have access to those NWC files.

I must admit I took advantage of it's return and downloaded some Finale files to play through GrandOrgue, see what I can make of them.

Mostly early English composers, William Boyce, William Walond, John Stanley Purcell and Jeremiah Clarke

Particularly like the set of 10 voluntaries Opus 5

Click on the yellow speaker symbol to listen to an electronic rendering, then think of what registration you would use, scores are available as PDFs and also in Finalé .mus format, same goes for opus 6 and 7 voluntaries.
