Jazz Canaries

I will have life-long affection for Ella, Sarah, Lady Day, June Christy, and Anita O'Day but my present favourite is Diana Krall (partly influenced by her top class Piano).
Who do all you others like most?

Oldude I don't go at all with Diana Krall just not my cup of tea, you did not mention Billie Holliday ?? her rendering of "Forbidden Fruits" must be a classic. Also I was a keen admirer of Peggy Lee when she sang with the George Sheering Quintet.

I find it strange that neither of you mention, Dame Cleo, surely Britains greatest vocalist. Not all her work is jazz, but more than enough is to warrant inclusion.

I agree with Dame Cleo, saw her live wow, absolutely brilliant. I also like Ella, but am not a great fan of Diana Krall.

Hi JHK,Mike and Margaret,

Lady Day was the nickname Lester Young gave to Billie Holiday (who in turn Called him Prez).
Sorry for missing out Cleo and Peggy who are also favourites of mine but if I'd listed all of the jazz girls in my collection the thread would have been too long.
However, just for fun I will add the initials of 12 others. See who can get them and who spots the deliberate mistake;
E.B; M.B; C.C; A.G; L.H; S.K; A.R; D.R; K.S; N.S; C.T; N.W; D.W.

Cheers John

Hi all,
I was a little surprised to hear that some of you dont like Diana Krall, because I rate her so highly.
Are you not mixing her up with Irene Kral who I dont care much for?

Eve Boswell

Annie Ross
Dianne Reeves
Kay Starr
Nina Simone

Deliberate mistake 13 not 12.

From that youtube track, I'd say she should keep her gob shut and concentrate on the piano. That was the first (and hopefully last) time I hear her sing, I thought it ruined the piano and bass playing. Sorry John, an agree to differ situation methinks.

Hi Margaret,
You got 11 from 13 (Right d.m).
Not Eve Boswell or Kay Starr. I'll leave the other two open for someone else (or yourself of course) to have a guess.
Hi JHC and Mike,
Like you say Mike we'll agree to differ, though I do think you should hear more of her.
With that in mind I may drop you one or two of my favourite tracks.

Cheers John

Found this list via Google, can't throw any light on EB or KS from it though.

Two current UK girl singers, Samantha (Sam) Brown and Ruby Turner, although Ruby does do mostly soul.

Try this for Kay Starr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3Es-UJepFQ

One of the best blues singers that I came accross was Bessie Tucker "Fort Worth and Denver Blues" etc etc. a very earthy kind of voice

Hi Margaret,
The 2 missing songsters (E.B; K.S;) are Elkie Brooks and Keely Smith.
Hi Mike,
I had never used Youtube before being pointed to it in this Forum, but in my humble opinion the sound quality coming out of it is pretty poor.
Remembering my posts on Don Goldie and Diana Krall and the Youtube references arising, neither of them sounded anywhere near as good as in my own CDs.
I dont think it paid Kaye Starr any favours either.
I dont think I'll be spending much time seeking out jazz on that particular website.

Ah thank you, Keely Smith I didn't know and I never thought of Elkie Brooks. I must admit the sound on youtube is not always good, it just gives you a brief listen.

Some of the Classical works on youtube can be OK, jazz often reasonable, pop can be really dire though.

I tend to listen to stuff on there to get a general idea then go looking for a decent version, you can at least tell the difference between something tuneful and an atonal load of manure.

I do agree, there is a way of greatly improving the sound quality but I have never bothered
