• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Can anyone give me some ideas of the registration used in the majority of this extract?

I'm adding some stops to one of the sample sets for GrandOrgue and would like some idea of what to look for, sometimes just playing a single note from a sample set doesn't always give as clear an impression as a few measures.

The extract is from a voluntary by Henry Heron (1700's) played on the organ of Wimborne Minster.

Mike,

The solo line sounds like a thin solo reed or a Cornet V.
The grander registration sound like foundation stops at 8' & 4' with mutation stops added.

Sorry to unearth this topic so late

For the solo line, I would say bourdon 8', plus sesquialtera (2'2/3 + 1'3/5) plus maybe larigot (1' 1/3)
There are too many high harmonics over the tierce, and this is not the velvety sound of the Cornet V, at least as I know it in the french organ

And the main line suggests me a small plenum based on soft principals or bourdon 8' + prestant 4' plus doublette 2' and no more than 3 our 4 ranks of fourniture.

Close, but not quite; as far as I know the solo line was played on the Positive Gedeckt 8ft., Tierce, Larigot and Sifflute 1ft. The plenum was that of the G.O. chorus, Open Diapason I and II, Principal, Twelfth, Fifteenth and Mixture (19-22-26-29).

I would guess that the player was Martin Schellenberg.

Welcome back, and thanks for that, I was trying to set up something near the sound on GrandOrgue. I'm still learning!

Thank you, Mike - you are welcome.

Have you been able to pick up a copy of the more recent CD yet? The organ sounds quite different on it.

Haven't been able to get out much recently, but if this weather holds I hope to get out there in the next week or so.

I see Hauptwerk have a VPO sample set for Salisbury, heard an example, sounds good but a bit expensive for me!! ($549)

[tongue in cheek]How about a Wimborne sample set for GrandOrgue? [/tongue in cheek] ;)
