Creating awareness: Vulvodynia

I am trying to create a bit of awareness about a condition called vulvodynia. Vulvodynia is a condition that affect millions of women's lives, and yet it little known, possibly because it is somewhat difficult and for some embarrasing to discuss. It is estimated that 16% of women in America will suffer from this condition at some point in their life, and yet few are diagnosed. Vulvodynia is characterized by localized pain in a womans vulva, a feeling that is described as being seared with acid. For some women the pain is only upon contact, for others it is a constant iching and scratching and for an unfortunate few it is severe enough to make even sitting down painful.

I have personally just been diagnosed with this condition, after ten months of pain that has made intercourse impossible. For most women it will hit between their twenties and thirties. I am twentyone and have had vulvodynia for almost a year, but many women go several year undiagnosed, thinking that the problem is in their head. For me it has been very exhausting mentally to visit doctors sometimes several times a month, and yet with no physical signs of sickness to be found. There is no certain cure at this point, and I don't personally have much hope that I will ever have a fully functional sexlife, which has been devastating for my view of myself as a woman. However, the more women step forward and talk about the pain, the closer we can come to finding a cause and possibly even a cure for this chronic condition.

It is very important with health issues that we learn to take our symptoms seriously, and that we insist on others doing the same. Perhaps even more important is that we learn to break the tabu of speaking seriously about our netherregions, despite the potential akwardness.

I will be writing more later, but I am on my way out the door now :)

Cheers people!

I think it's great that you are taking a pro-active stance on this issue, Buttercup. Not an easy thing to bring up. But awareness will help others to be able to deal with this.

I had not heard of this condition until now. Perhaps there are others who suffer from the symptoms you describe, and who may read your post and gain some knowledge about the affliction.

I'm sorry to hear you have Volvodynia. I hope the pain isn't too severe, and that it can be managed effectively. Perhaps the condition will lessen or go away entirely at some point. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Btw, I think the term "nether regions" is pretty cool. :)

What I am questioning and find a little strange is the subject matter being posted on a web site that is intended as a music site even if it is posted in a general subject one, why not post on a site intended for women’s health ??

Well, we have plenty of religion debates, as well as threads about government, natural disasters etc, and I happen not to be a member of any women's health sites. I was convinced it would not bother anyone, but you are free and welcome to find someone to erase the thread. Permission granted from here.

^ Just to add, this thread is in the Open debate forum.

Simple solution for anyone who doesn't like this thread, and I say this with respect and kindness; they don't have to enter it. :)

Hello Buttercup89,

My wife saw this question and she mentioned *Vestibulitis*which can be excruciatingly painful for some women. We hope that there might be some medical help in the offing for you.

Take care,

Having three wives, three daughters and two granddaughters I tend to have more awareness and sympathy for female problems, even if my concern is rather selfish in that I feel protective about my girls. I hope for eveyones sake that some progres is made in this condition.

Unless he's a Mormon that is; but then, he'd still have all those mothers-in-law to contend with, I guess.

Teddy, you are obviously an example of the saying

"Man spends the majority of his life looking for the ideal woman, ... ... in the meantime he marries."
