I'm not looking for specific artists, groups or bands, but just general classification preferrences.

Big Bands, swing

Big Bands, dance

Trad/Dixie small bands/groups (up to about 8 players)

Blues, small bands/groups (up to about 8 players)

Bop small bands/groups (up to about 8 players)

Modern (like MJQ, Shearing) small bands/groups (up to about 8 players)

"Post modern" (not quite sure how to classify it, progressive?) small bands/groups (up to about 8 players)

Solo piano, stride, boogie, swing

Solo piano, modern

Solo Guitar

Other suggestions.

For myself I listen to all the above except the more recent progressive stuff, if any have to be bottom of the list then bop

Taking your own list Mike, in my order, I would take:-
Your No. 3 Like Louis, Teagarden, Condon, and many others
---"--- 1 Like Basie, Ellington
---"--- 6
---"--- 9 Like Brubeck or Garner
---"--- 8 Like Fats Waller or Teddy Wilson
---"--- 2 Like Miller, Dorsey
---"--- 10 Like Montgomery, Kessel
---"--- 4, 5, 7 Ruled out

I would add other categories as follows:-
West Coast groups such as G.Mulligan, Shorty Rogers, Brubeck 4, Chet Baker etc
Post-modern Groups where earlier forms of jazz is resurrected (For example Vache Bros, Randy Sandke and many others)

Hi Mike,

A really great question - I'll try it:

Jazz Trio
Jazz Quartet
Jazz Quintet
Big Band Jazz
Big Band Swing
Piano Solo
Guitar Solo

Generally, I'll draw the line after McCoy Tyner and the quartal/modal symphonic hard post-bop harmonies he *operates* with. I know that some jazz musicians experiment with even more atonal/dissonant serial harmony.

John, I was thinking in more general terms and including the west coast groups with Shearing, MJQ etc, they are more or less contemporary with each other and I didn't want too many categories.

OK Mike,
Then just return to my first preferences from your list.
With regard to my "ruleouts" :-
a) Blues groups - I guess I am referring to the old time vocal blues which never turned me on.
But of course there is the Teagarden type of music as in "Misery and the blues"
which as you Know, I love.
b) I genuinely have no time for the Charlie Parker type of bop especially as was followed by the Coltrane sort of stuff.
c) Similarly progressive jazz of the type I feel certain you refer to, is something I cant bring myself to listen to.

Cheers John

I like all forms of jazz from solo to Big Band but as in classical my preference goes with small groups MJQ, Brubeck, Goodman small group in classical I put String Quartets at the very top by a country mile, I even like to days jazz if its not to radical [must have a beat and a recognisable melody] can not stand Free Jazz and some of todays classical composers I really struggle with
