• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

Not at all dear Mat !

Regarding to the tuning problem... you're right, but I haven't till now been in need to do this. Usually I select the tuning or if I did save in a specific organ set it comes up with the tuning I saved and then play as selected without retune ect.
I have to investigate this........
Maybe we can ask in Reaper forum, I always get great help from the guys there.

All the best

Regarding to the tuning problem...

I found a solution to my problem by myself. It turns out that first you have to open the drop-down menu Functions and use the desired shortcut while the menu is still open.

Back again. I've finally found the time and the money to upgrade my PC. I bought a new motherboard, CPU and RAM. But, unfortunately, I had to reinstall the OS. Ever since then, I can't seem to open HW as VST in Reaper. All I get is an empty window, without the organ console. I copied HW's .dll file to Reaper's folder, but obviously there's something else I'm forgetting about. Help?

Hi Mat,

Looks like you're using Hauptwerk v4? In which case all you will see is the Hautpwerk VST link. You will then need to load Hauptwerk separately and select 'VST Link' in the Audio configuration...

This is how HWv4 does VST - it is just an Audio and/or MIDI link with the VST program - no longer loading the whole of Hautpwerk as a VSTi.

What is your MIDI setup? Are you going to want to record MIDI in Reaper or not?

Hey Graham,

no longer loading the whole of Hautpwerk as a VSTi.
Oh, that's... not what I expected at all.

I'm using HW v4, indeed.

Not sure what you mean by MIDI setup? I've got a keyboard hooked up with my PC via USB cable. And I definitely want to make recordings.

Ok, so I open Reaper and choose HW from available VSTi. But when I try to open HW in the stand-alone mode, I get an error message saying that my keyboard is already in use (it is, by Reaper) and that I should try again when it's free. Seems like I can't use Reaper and HW simultaneously with one keyboard?

EDIT:
I just rememberd that I can record simply by using HW in the stand-alone mode. I even tried it a couple times, but each of the recordings I made took 20MB of space and more, while the ones done in Reaper just about 3MB. What's the deal here?

Hi Mat,

Yes, you can use Reaper and Hw4 simultaneously... this was why I asked to question. As you're going to be recording MIDI in Reaper, you need to configure Hauptwerk's MIDI inputs to just the VST Linker. Think of HW4 VSTi as simply a virtual Audio cable and a virtual MIDI cable between HW and your VSTi application - in this case Reaper. So you need to configure HW to be using the virtual cables, and then the MIDI will come from Reaper and the Audio will go into Reaper and then out to your system. A bit of a mind shift in comparison to v3 and all other VSTi apps that I know!

Hope that helps,
GrahamG

Ok, I think I get it now. Though with the HW v4, they made recording much more complicated. This is a serious drawback for me (and the only one I've noticed so far, for that matter).

Anyway, thanks again for your help. Ah, what would I do without you, guys?

Mat, dear friend you do not paying attention....

I started a thread about HW4 and there I describe the completely different approach on VSTi thing.
Yes it's a major drawback for a great program like HW4.

I'm suspecting that they tried to find a way for us free version users not to be able to open two or more instances of HW at once.... and increasing this way polyphony and mixing sets... hmmm but this made things terrible for recording music now.

Sincerely I'm pissed off for this thing. All the world is full of standard VSTs, why HW has to do things tricky and in the end unusable?

So, for continuo organ & harpsichord and orchestra I started using my Kontakt 4.2.2 and things are great.

Now for other works, like solo organ.... I still got my HW3.30 in my 32bit 2GB ram, in the end we cannot load more than 1.5GB with free edition, so there it works as before ! Yes.

Cheers and all my best

Hey Panos, seems that I totally forgot about that other thread. Fortunately, I have everything back under control now.

Take care.

Is it possible to assign this slider

to a slider on my keyboard?

Dunno Mat, good question and heplful, but as far as I know everything Reaper has inside is controllable from outside.
Your M-Audio 88ES has a data slider so I know what you mean and for what reason... he he

I have to look on manual a bit to confirm the procedure.

Panos,

I went on the Net and figured it all out. As you suspected, it is possible. So, here's how to do it (in case anyone else needs it):

From Menu bar choose Actions->Show action list->then find Track: Set volume for track 01, 02, 03, etc... (MIDI CC only)->Add shortcut for selected action->Move the desired slider [or is it fader?]->click OK and you're ready to go.

Not as intuitive as in HW v4 for example, but it gets the job done. Use the same pattern to assign buttons/sliders/faders/knobs/whatever to hundreds of other actions in Reaper.

Hi,
In a similar setup to Panos (Hauptwerk VSTi and EWQL Symphonic Orchestra in Reaper) here is an improvisation for Trumpet and Organ played by Andre Nel (my partner) http://www.sa-virtualorgans.co.za/downloads/OrganAndTrumpetImprov.mp3
The organ is my free 4M/P English Cathedral for Hauptwerk see (http://www.sa-virtualorgans.co.za/HW3-EnglishCathedral.htm).

I'm looking forward to hearing more from Panos :)

Hi Everyone!

I realize it's been a LONG time since I've been around, but life events have gotten in the way and left me with no time to spend on this wonderful forum. Those that know me know that I tend to ramble one.... ;) and that means that no visit to MIMF can be a short one for me. There has been so much that has happened in the more than a year since my last visit. I have been doing research into my family tree the past several years and that seems to take most of my time; countless all-nighters sitting transfixed in front of the computer monitor going through old census sheets page by page, etc. But I've met about a dozen or so cousins whilst doing said research and shared storeys and pictures and watched as my family history comes to life.

(I feel myself starting to get carried away with blabbing and don't want to bore you all to tears...) Suffice it to say that it's been a hectic 2 years with family health concerns, ups and downs and all of the emotional turmoil that goes with the territory; several trips back to the states to visit ill family members and moved again (much to our chagrin - does anyone like to move?) and have one more trip to Florida to make in 2 weeks to attend a memorial service for my mum that passed away the end of March after 9 weeks in the hospital...probably the worst thing I can think of to happen to anyone in life...

So I have decided to take some much deserved 'me' time and get back to my VPO which has not been touched in almost 2 years. I need a good stress reliever.

Graham, do you think your partner Andre would share a copy of the music for the organ and trumpet improv with me? I have been listening to it every day since you first posted it...I use it as an 'alarm' on my desktop whenever I have something I need to be reminded of and just love it.

I'm going to have to switch to my onboard sound on my music computer since our newest addition to the menagerie (part Chinois, part Chihuahua or Jack Russel Terrier, not sure which - but a very active little pup) chewed the breakout cable on my Delta 1010LT and naturally it's the one that can't be replaced without buying another sound card... We're going to see if some shoppe can repair it but I won't hold my breath. In any event, I just feel the need to 'chill' at my keyboards again.

I will say that I have 'lurked' from time to time but not actually logged in since I've been gone. I'm happy to see that this site continues to grow and to inspire so many.

Panos - your website is a work of art . . . and I've even seen your posts in other places (we seem to have the same idea when it comes to home theatre pcs and softwares)

I am hoping that life will settle down somewhat this year and allow me to return to MIMF at least a few times each week but it seems now that I am busier than when I was working full time. My mum left me her novel which I am trying to promote and she also left an unfinished sequel and her memoir that I hope to finish for her. She had wanted to see her book made into a movie so I am working toward that end as well. Another move awaits us after the return from Florida but we are hopefully getting a loft in the village that will have enough space for all of my 'projects' and I hope to finally add my pedalboard to my VPO and build a cabinet for it.

I think about the wonderful people on the forum and look forward to being able to return before the year's end.

Wishing you all the best!

Cheers...Stephen

Hi Stephen,

And welcome back to the forum and to all the VPO fun! Andre's Trumpet Improv was just an improvisation to show the sampled organ and sampled trumpet playing together, so there is no sheet music for it - just music from Andre's soul.

Kind regards,
GrahamG

HI STEPHEN !!!!!!!!!!!
Just in time.... I was worrying about you.... I said one year is enough (or should I say... limit.? hehehe), where is this soul ? where is the Great Cyber ?

Family tree is a very good thing to know, glad that you did that research :)
We got a lot to talk about here..... and to be on this thread a bit, VSTi version in HW4 is different now, uses system exclusive link and blah blah

My site.... :) still under construction I have a lot to add and then I 'll make an announcement here on forum. Thanks for your kind words about.
I have many things running at the same time and this slows down everything, but you know me... I cannot stay with just one thing for a long time, I need changes, so re-visiting gives me more will to finish !!

Welcome back my friend !
Panos

PS. Andre's impro..... SUPER !!

Hi guys...and thanks for the kind words. I had a feeling since the piece I enquired about stated 'improv' that would be the case... but I just love that trumpet sound. And I truly have been listening to that piece EVERY day since it was posted...just love it!!! Graham, please tell Andre how much of an impact it made on me.

About the genealogy research...that will be an ongoing thing (I can't seem to do anything in a small way, either) and I even have submitted DNA for various tests. Some lines go way back to Saxony and Egypt (yes, even Cleopatra...small wonder now about me being fixated on Egyptian things, eh?) and others to the royal heads of most of Western Europe...just on my maternal side. My dad was a Gordon and that links back to Robert the Bruce! I've been relearning history but this time it really comes alive for me. I just haven't nailed more than 5 generations on my mum's father's side due to an illegitimate child and no further records...yet. But Joe says I have become addicted so I have to put it into its own place and not let it BE my life and take all my time.

Luckily, I asked my mum lots of family questions the last six months of her life and got many answers. The cousins near and far that I've met online doing the same research have filled in much she didn't know...especially about my dad's family. They divorced when I was so young.

Looks like I have quite a bit of catching up to do re the VPO software that I fell in love with a few years back.

Panos - how's your xbmc system working? Between that and WD HD that's been quite another project of love and frustration.

Cheers to you all. We are in our Jazz festival portion of the summer festivals now...and the fireworks.

A new chapter has begun in life.

Hi Stephen!

Good to have you back. I'm so sorry to hear about your Mother. Hope you're doing allright. Please keep strong.

I'm very curious as to what will come out of your Hammond organ (was it C3) project.

Also, good luck with your family tree research.

P.S. Wish I could've attended the jazz festival you mentioned...
