• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Organ Music of J.S. Bach - General thread

I know of at least three cd-recordings of BWV 1128 by renowned organists: Gerhard Weinberger was the first and added it to the final Volume of his Bach organ integral for CPO (together with Die Kunst der Fuge).
Bernard Foccroulle's recording shortly after was added to the re-issue of his Bach boxset (Ricercar).
And this spring a 3cd set with David Sanger was released on the small Euridice label.

But my guess is that there are probably more. It must be a wonderful piece to play.

It's gonna be only a matter of time until BWV 1128 will turn into Bach's most popular organ piece!

Going to to bed after being shuddered by this one:

Leo van Doeselaar playing the Prelude & Fugue in C-minor BWV 546 on the Van Hagerbeer/Schnitger organ of the Laurenskerk in Alkmaar, NL. This performance was part of a limited editioned boxset with Dutch organ recordings, and it's the most intense, stubborn and titanic interpretation that I know of this particular piece.

Sweet dreams will be waiting for me .....

Or then there's Jean Guillou doin' his thing with the Complete Organ Works of Bach on the Philips label - The tonal kaleidoscope of St. Eustache never fails to surprise one.

Dear Corno .... it almost hurts me to say this , but I don't like Guillou at all in (baroque and) Bach. IMHO: pure mannerism, I'm really sorry to say. And I don't like his choice of organs for this repertoire either.
If I want Bach in a French way, I'll go for f.i. Marie-Claire Alain, Olivier Vernet or Olivier Latry, to name but a few. Or even Michel Chapuis, even though I find his Bach playing quite superficial (chorales) and sloppy (free works).
But plz continue to enjoy Guillou. I'm not even 'only the piano player'. ;)

I.c. Philips recordings: the first integral by Wolfgang Rübsam is very much to my likings. But it's OOP for a long time, and his Naxos cycle is .... totally different, to say the least. Unfortunately, not in a positive way, as far as my taste is concerned.

Hi Marc,

No worries here - I know very well he is not liked, nor is his choice of instruments - Helmut Walcha playing the complete Organ Works of Bach is also on the listening shelf. And yes, I very much enjoy Olivier Latry and Daniel Roth. In my previous post I wished to be a little, shall we say, sarcastic...in re to choice of performers and instruments........

Still got and playing super, Walcha's two sets of 8+7=15 vinyl records Bach Complete from Archive Produktion from 1978 onwards (though recordings start in the 50's....). I was young and fascinated from.... I keep them as a treasure :-D

Marc, A really fine perfomance of the BWV 546. Thank you again. So many of the Organs in the Netherlands sound so wonderful.

Sigh of relief.

Hi Marc,

That bad, eh? Yeah, I've given many a Bachphile a serious case of Dyspepsia when mentioning Guillou. When I was younger I had made many a pilgrimage to hear and play the organ of Groote Kerk in Haarlem. Bach does sound nice on that instrument - Then, as I got older I didn't wish to limit myself to the Dutch or North Germanic School of organ building. So, upon being exposed to the C-C at St. Sulpice by Maitre Grunenwald and was given 3 hours on it one evening after the main doors were shut - Well, lets just say that I was "changed". JSBach just sounded so grand on such an instrument.
