Strange ideas of Jazz

[rant mode]I was just browsing Ebay Vinyl LPs for Jazz, they do have a number of artists that I would never in a lifetime consider as performing Jazz, for example, Frank Sinatra, Edmundo Ros, James Last, Bert Kaempfert, Roberto Delgado, Tom Jones, Johnny Mathis and Elvis *+/#£$% Presley, and that's just the first page of 69!!

I sometimes wonder at search engines, often seems like they're taking the ****!

You can get rid of some of those if you exclude Big Bands from your criteria, but then you lose all the swing like Ellington, Basie, Herman, Goodman, Miller and similar.

I know what you mean. Even Magpie Records can get it wrong (in my humble opinion). Its a bit like the girl said about frogs. "You have to kiss a lot of them before you find a prince".

While we are in this frame of mind I have never accepted George Gershwin as a classical composer but he is listed as such even in the Penguin Guide, a very good song and show writer but IMO not classical :scold:

Colin, [pedant mode] Wiki list 12 compositions of his as classical, including his piano concerto in F, American in Paris, Cuban Overture, Porgy and Bess, Rhapsody in Blue and others. Many of his works do get played on classical radio and at concerts, so this presumably qualifies him for the listing you quote.[/pedant mode]

Mike, as I said it was IMO, just because Wiki says some thing does not mean it is right but we get back to definitions and that goes on for ever some even say Geraldo and Victor Silvester were Big Jazz Bands ha ha

Hi Mike,
That lassie with the whip is not my idea of Jazz, although perhaps that one on the bottom line could be (perhaps). I must have lead a sheltered life but I cant imagine how you learnt all the ways to mess up a post.
On a serious follow-up to the original argument. I have always wondered who these guys are who classify Sinatra as a jazz person. I personally love his music but Jazz it is not. (Tony Bennett may be so classed at times however.)

It amazed me when looking for ringtone downloads, how many tunes were classed as Jazz. Some most definitely were not Jazz, or anything like.

OK, How about Rod Stewart?? I was forced to hear some of his stuff last week and I actually like him singing some of the Standards, particularly if he has a small group backing, have I developed bad taste or what?? He does not have the vocal range but so many singers [pop & jazz etc etc] have the same problem.

Thanks you Colin, it does amaze me how some people decide what is Jazz. I have never thought of Rod Stewart as Jazz, but I haven't listened to al lot of his music.

I would never normally think of Louis Armstrong as anything but a jazz singer, but in the CD "L ouis with Oscar Peterson" the result surpasses such a description.
Try it if you dont believe me.
