I to find it inconvienient to use a PC for music. With a CD I can take it anywhere, in the car etc rather than just have in my study or office. I suppose the answer is an Ipod but I cannot get my head round them at the moment. I'm still struggling with the video recorder. At the last count I still have almost 100 LPs. Considering I use computers all day at work it is a bit pathetic really. Now, where is that old windup gramaphone I had.....

Teddy I have a mp3 player [Creative] Australian a real beaut and easy to use it is 16GB and I have added 2 memory cards of 4GB each, the 16 GB gives me in excess of 200 CDs @192kbps, one memory card is for talking books the other for lectures eg, the Ashkenazy/Beethoven P Son series. The sound reproduction is unbelievable [ear pods] just have to be careful not to have it too loud, regarding CDs in the car I have a 6CD stacker which gives a bit of variety and it will play mp3 CDs I have made one and it is equal to 7-8 hrs @192k, so you could get 50hrs+ if you wanted to :)

I'm gradually copying my LPs to digital storage.
Mike the CD is very user friendly but keep your LPs safe, how many LPs do you have, I am down to about 150 but do sometimes have vinyl only evenings , have you checked the price some of them are fetching?

I will have to drag myself kicking and screaming into the 21 century. You have reminded me that my youngest has an MP3 which was superseeded by the Ipod. I will experiment. I also love the vinyl and have about 100 safely tucked away. The pat metheney TRAVELS is on vinyl and was 1/3 the price of a CD. It is immaculate both discs and cover. I too enjoy playing them more than CDs and the artwork on some adds to the enjoyment.

Colin,
I have a Creative Zen Micro and the holder/player/charger for it and I was always happy with the sound quality It still plays fine but I'm stuck with what I had synched before I got my new PC with Vista. Creative failed to bring out a new driver for the Zen and I cant now alter the playlist anymore
Infuriating!!!

The most I have seen asked for a copy of a 2 LP album that I have is over £120 on amazon for a used Cleo Laine and Ray Charles version of Porgy and Bess. I have seen the same set elsewhere for prices of £30 upwards.

Tempted to put it on Ebay with a start price of £75!! Any offers?? ;) ;)

I have seen a copy of the original soundtrack of Porgy and Bess for almost £500.00. I'd love it, but could not justify the price.

My next door neighbour when I was in business was a 2nd hand dealer and gave me first pick of any LPs, the last one I picked up was The Dutch Swing Collage a 2LP set for NZ$2.00

Hi Colin,

I recently renewed acquaintance with "THe Dutch Swing College" (Thanks to a comment by Margaret) and was blown away.
When I checked Amazon I was amazed at the price for what must be out-of-print Albums.
Cheers John

PS. However I'm thinking of getting their 1955 Cd (20 tracks) for £8-97

They are well worth it John, loved seeing them live. I know the line up has changed though.

Hi Margaret,
Yester-een whilst messing about on some weird old jazz forum (no, I havn't had any of teddy's falling down water) I listened to them on Spotify for a couple of hours.
I was amazed at the wide range of jazz music that came across and how uniformly excellent was the quality. (And thats from an ex-quality systems controller)

Cheers John

I don't know about you lot but I seem locked into a time warp with jazz the 20's up to say the 50's roughly, as in classical the modern stuff goes down a road that I don't want to follow

Hi John

I know what you mean, they have done a wide range. teddy's falling down water? lol must try some.

Colin, my hubby says he doesn't do much of the modern stuff, most of his listening is 20's -60's.

I find the same with rock and pop music. Is it becuase I was growing up in the era? Maybe it is because in the old days musicians tended to learn to play an instrument when they were young, played with various people while they learnt and honed their skills and progressed from there. Pubs, clubs, coffoe bars and church halls were all venues for them, paid or unpaid. To many musicians, not to mention pop groups are manufactured these days and this seemed to start in the sixties. Now that you have to have a licence before any music is played it will only make things worse. It is harder for e few people to get together in a public place and jam, whatever their genre.
