• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

Pipe organ (Baroque ) AU plugin's for Logic pro 8

Hi!
I am new on this great forum! Some years agoe I worked as a church organ player in different churches. Now I just try to compose music, and record it in my home studio. I use the Logic Studio Pro 8 in this process. The pipe organ sounds that I use is the "GarageBand" plugin's "Test tone" from Apple. These different pipe organ sounds good, but not perfect :) Now I'm looking for pipe organ plugin's that sounds more identical to a real pipe organ. I wish to find a good baroque organ that I can import as an Audio Unit in to Logic. I have been looking at Hauptwerk and similar sites. But these virituel organs are very complicated; they are designed for several manuals, pedals and several speakers etc. They are meant to be in real churches. I don't need all that equipemnt. I have just one manual (digital piano), and I am looking for these fantastic sounds, but not all these add and stuff. Can anyone recomend a plugin that is simple but at the same time sounds fantastic.
I found this fantastic organ "PSZ-pipe organ" at "Inspired Acoustics" for the price of just 99$ (Retail box - downloadable), but I become a bit disappointed when I read that the condition was that you had to have the "Hauptwerk 3".
I am thankful if anyone can give me a link or some ideas where to find what I am looking for!

Hi ostahl1973 and welcome to a wonderfull forum. It's an organist paradise.:D

Well, I understand your situation very well. I'm a composer, pianist, organist and multi keyboard player and I have both workshops workin'. The normal midi/audio studio and the...."toaster"( a digital 2man/ped organ) !!:guitar:

I ,like you, use my old trusted Korg SG1D as mother piano type 88' keyboard connected to my pc then to speaker system (along with a Yamaha Motif ES6).;)
My "toaster" is also connected to pc then to VPOs(inside) and return to organs speaker system.I love this system. Turn on and play !:D

First take a look at my "Hauptwerk the VSTi version" thread in this forum. You'll get some ideas. And then to "VPOs without samples".Get them !

I'm not using a Mac so I do not know exactly how logic works. I work with REAPER. But all hosts have the same logic. All you need - good VSTi s!

Hauptwerk is the best there is concerning the pipe organ sound, then comes GrandOrgue(not for Mac) , jOrgan and the...rest.:smirk:

Download the free version of Hauptwerk 3 for Mac (Milan Digital site) and give it a try. It's not too difficult ! Of course it can be played from one keyboard, even an 88 piano like. I feel good when I play organ like this, try the positiv one manual sets. They are great and the sound is fabulus (i.e. Prib positiv). or some of the exeptional harpsichords !!

Just open the AU version of HW3 inside your host (as you do with your rest instruments)then go to the general selections and tell Hauptwerk what keyboard you have, witch channel it transmits ect, save your set and free to go to play and enjoy. You can add some of your best effects in it also.
You don't need the extra speakers, the standard stereo self powered (or not) system it's just great.
Go also to pcorgan.com. You'll find huge information.

But let me ask you something. What kinda music you're gonna play with just one manual ? Some baroque manualiter pieces? some Mozart church sonatas ? For this the one manual it's ok. But what kinda organ will be like this. You're gonna miss the huge majestic sound of the full manuals/pedals sound. As an organist you have to seek for a thing like that at home.
Tell me what you think. I'll be glad to discuss with you.

Anyway, that's for now, I hope I helped a bit.
Cheers:cheers:

I use the free edition of Hauptwerk. and channel all manuals to play on one channel..so can use stops from all manual on one.. works good ( I also have 2 keyboards if I want to use 2 manuals but for most of bach etc can be played on one manual anyway)I also use the Miditzer 316... a theater organ but very good stops that can be arranged fine for any area of music I have found... and is free.. and the pistons allow you to program them on S2 and S3 set ups on bottom right corner as you want. as well as piston for each manual are already set. It also allows you to record what you are playing to hear play back yourself . Ths might work for your needs without investing funds.
Take Care and good luck

Hi Bill !
I agree with you and I think you opened something here, I mean about the Theater Organ.

Yes , we can play many many different styles of music with it. I tried some blues with Midiger 150 and it sounds very intreresting, a rival to B-3 ?

Also some symphonic works maybe sound better on theater with these percussion stops (marimba/bells/xylo/ride-crash cymbals/bass drum) on certain occasions.
Bigger 3 manual theaters are better for this task and of course for great sountrack music !

I am totally agree with you :) But at the time I can't afford to buy to much equipment (my wife would have gone crazy ;)). For now I just need the perfect sound collor from the pipe organ into my compositions, like a "sound carpet". It is not important how it feels to play it when I work at home. For me it is important to hear the pipe organ attack, the "false" air flow from the instrument, and the sound from the mechanics etc. when I record it in Logic. But of course it would have been perfect to "built" a digital church organ at my home :) Some years ago I had a Roland VK7 and a Roland JX8P that I used as manuals 1 and 2, and I had 2 Roland PK 5 pedal set. I connected this 2 Roland PK5 together as one pedal set. All this connected together with the VK7. It was good to do the church organ practice, but the quality of the pipe organ- sound was bad. But as a Hammond B3 sound it was very good. But I sold this equipment because I want to have a iMac with logic. If i want to do church organ practice, I have a church (with a real pipe organ, wih 30 voices) that I can practice in.
Thank you again, and you have helped me alot :)

OK Ostahl1973 !
I got the full picture now.

Great pipe organ sound sets for "carpet' work as you want it (also free, so your wife's ok) :
-Prib positiv, Slata Koruna Mini, Oosterwigerd Muller positiv, St.Carlo Brescia-
These have very clean sound and not much reed stops to interfere with you other instruments.
If you want the full sound, go to these free organs
Stiehr-Mockers(Jeux d' orgues2)extended, Enigma, Brut-Leuchten big German school and of course the Haverhill , St.Anne, St.Agustine, St.Steven, Prudhoe and free Cathedral English ones. I hope I didn't forget one, if so another member will correct me :) :)

Do your search and we talk again on what you 'll find
Best regards

Yeah, the Stiehr Mockers extended is nice, I've extended mine further with stops from Enigma.

Could you play the pedal part on the keyboard and record it as a Midi file and then run that as though it was an "accompniment" to your keyboard?

Hi Mike ! Sorry is this question for me?

If it is, yes. In a sequencer/multitracker set-up you can do that. And you can record each part independently :
ch1 right hand (either positiv/great) part.
Ch2 left hand part,
ch 3 pedal part.
Also many combinations if there is a 3 or 4 manual set.

There is something though, that's different and noticeable in a set-up like this.
If you start recording each part with the metronome on and do the quantizing, then the final resoult will be much different if you played all parts live. Something will sounds unatural...
In a live performance no all notes went exactly together at some points, there's allways a tiny little latency between hands and pedals. Of course there are exeptions, killer players....But this latency is the thing that makes every performance unique and enjoyable.

Cheers

Not only for you Panos, more a general suggestion. I would think it could also be used in "practice mode" record each hand/pedal as you learn it then play back while you learn the next?

Yes Mike, it's a good option and facility workin' with sequencers/multitrackers. This way you have an extra help to understand some very complex fugues and other similar works, i.e. you can slow down a bit the tempo to hear cleaner some difficult passages and so on. Then go for tutti on the real and/or digital pipe organ.
"Practice mode"....a good one Mike !

Double cheers
