• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Hammond J100 Sound?

cm215

New member
Hi,

I'm new to the forum and Hammond organs in general and have some questions regarding the J100 series. I have the opportunity of getting one for free but from what I've gathered from various sources online, the Hammond J100 series are described as "not having that Hammond sound" ... So what exactly do they sound like? I know it's difficult to describe, but how it is it different in relation to the "Hammond Sound?" I'd like a organ that has that 60s/70s progressive/psychedelic sound so will I be very disappointed? I know this is a loooooong shot, but if anyone has a J100 -- can you record / post a sound clip? Any info is appreciated.

Thanks!
Chris

The Hammond J100 series was first produced in 1965, sans the old type tube amplifiers [most organ manufacturers were transistorized by this time] so it had electronic circuitry to produce the sounds ... ergo, no tone wheels, and as such a 'different' sound characteristic.

Searched for any sound clips of the J100 and found none on the internet. Perhaps a member here may be able to help on that accord.

Hi Chris !! and welcome. It's a fine company here.

Tell me some more info please. Psychedelic organ sound like let's say "In a Cada da vita" of Iron Butterfly or like "Echoes" Hammond sound of Rick Wright of Pink Floyd ? or Wakeman's in Yes albums? or even Ray Manzarek's on "This is the end"?
As you see it's a completely different approach. Transistor/Tonewheel.

My advice is to come to the Virtual Organ commnunity. You can have any sound your heart desires and mostly for FREE. You have only to spent your money in getting a hardware (physical) organ with two manuals and a very good midi interface so it can work perfect with a computer.
I can give you many links to free download a lot of great organs then and enjoy !

if you like J100 go for it....but I wouldn't spent a dime for it on this century !

Cheers
