And all those 'dastardly greenhouse gases' were present at the time of the first roman emperor - BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Those climate-nazis and enviro-talibans are on quaaludes and 151 proof rum...

CD, I think the problem is that today, all those greenhouse gases are working at a much more rapid rate than ever before to destroy the protective ozone layer around the Earth's atmosphere which serves to shield us from the harmful effects of solar rays. I would also point out the fact that the ice caps are definitely melting at a good clip, just look at those polar bears clinging to a small ice floe surrounded by open water in what were 5-10 years ago vast ice glaciers. I would agree with you that there are fanatics and extremists on "the left" of this issue, but--in fairness--I don't see how we can afford as a species to ignore the fact that our environmental footprint thas been at times much, much too heavy, with adverse consequences for Mother Earth and thus all humans down the road. I'm not advocating going back to the horse and buggy and steam power, but I do believe that the quest for profits should never trump moderation and/or what benefits the most people in the long haul.

England is in dire need of more power stations. The EU will force us to close some and we do not have time to build new ones before the nnext three years is up. By which time we will only have an electrical production suplus of 4%. We can reactiveate some of the old gas turbines, but that will put us at risk from other countries holding us to ranson. More windturbines? HA ha ha ha ha.

Being on an island, to me, tidal or wave power would seem the obvious solution. Some of the ideas for estuarial barrages may not be acceptable to wildlife concerns but there is a tidal flow all round the coast, some of the tidal "races" like Portland Bill would seem ideal to me, shipping avoids them so no problem there.
    Cheers MIKE.

Oh that shibboleth about the Polar Bears clinging to the ice flows - The polar bear population is increasing rapidly because there is an abundance of seals that eat fish that eat plankton found under the ice where the "scientists" never thought there were plankton in the first place. No, I ridicule and mock the climate-nazis and enviro-talibans for their quasi-science.

I agree with Mike. It is a no brainer and the existing wind turbine bases at sea can be used to link the power. Atomic energy is out of favour at the moment but at least one, if not two new stations would stop us being held to ransom by foreign countries. Or we can all stop using electricity and go back to using candles etc. I see no other hope at the moment.

And how would I power the computer Mat. Pedal power? Well I suppose that would solve the weight problem.
