Choral and Opera area?

I had forgotten about this thread until yesterday when Robin and I were discussing this very same idea. Seems like there is lots of interest in this and it could greatly benefit the forum in general, too.

Let us kick it around for a few days ... there are some technical issues that she and I must make decisions on when implementing forum changes/additions like this.

We'll keep you posted :)

Its a supergreat idea to have a choral and opera area. A number of questions pop up: What will differentiate it from the classical forum? Can it be an area in which the practitioners/conductors/directors and the aficionados/lovers/listeners feel at home in?

. . . (Well you should be in practice, you just opened the "Identify this" forum.)

While true, as it only takes three minutes to 'create', the technical side of it is placement ... read on:

CD hit the nail on the head ... this is the technical side of the idea ... while opera is primarily classical, choral is not, and we are taking into consideration separating the two ... however we can have only one of each in the total forum picture.

We also have to take into consideration the overall general appearance of the forum. We (Robin and I) are both in favor of adding these, so it's just a matter now of she and I working out the placement.

Dear Krummhorn and RoJo,

Our colleague DorsetMike mentions something to the effect of "sub-forums" for Choral and for Opera. It seems that if it were so simple then the admins job of "creating" would be relatively easy. However, I detect that there are details which can elude........

The physical 'creation' of a forum is quite easy ... at the most, a couple minutes and half a dozen mouse clicks.
Opera will most likely go under the Classical music parent forum ... we are presently discussing where to place choral.

Robin and I are seldom online here at the same times, so our internal discussions on this can take several days. The addition of the two forums will happen ... we just have to paint the walls and decide in what corner the water cooler will go :).

My thinking on Choral would probably put it in a classical area as it should cover for example

Madrigals, Motets, Anthems, Masses, Oratorios, etc; i.e mainly choir and choral group works, not sure if there would be a place for some of the victorian songs like "Come into the Garden Maud", the "Lost Chord" , "All in the April Evening" and similar items that you would find on albums by Kenneth McKellar, Stuart Burrows and others.

Should there be a split between sacred and secular? I can see it being a bit of a minefield!

I would suggest that there is no split at all between Sac & Sec and if a post does not quite fit as classical "The Sally Gardens" for example no great harm is done.

NB I love 'The Sally Gardens' :)

We have just completed adding the two new forums:

  • Opera ... a sub-forum of the Classical Music forum.
  • Choral ... a stand alone forum as choral can be most anything (secular, sacred, jazz, spoken, etc.)
I've moved a few threads into each forum area ... there are probably more to be moved, so if you see any, send us a PM with the thread link (url) and we will take care of it shortly.

With great respect Lars I wonder if this [choral] is what Mike had in mind? for me choral is multiple voice [choir] and definitely not Jazz or show music or the spoken word, just thinking out loud you understand

I appreciate your feedback, Colin :)

We established "Choral" as a stand alone as everything that is choral is not necessarily classical. To dedicate a choral sub-forum for each genré would become too cluttered, so we made it generic.

Fair enough, McDuff :):)

:tiphat: You're welcome, Mike ...

I've moved a few into that forum area already ... if you (or anyone else) spot more, let us know and we can get them moved, too.
