@ Mat, Yes, I've seen Fight Club with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton; and I do agree with you about the overall mood of both of these works. Both are very somber and gritty. I don't recall if Fight Club was also done in a black and white format, but like Pi it left a very dingy and sour taste in one's mouth {not to mention bloody!}. You're also spot on in that Pi is not your normal tv fare: so much the better, at least as far as I am concerned.

Re watched Taxi with Robert DeNiro. A study in a man going off the rails. Some brilliant acting from him. "You lookin at me..............." Anyone who has had to deal with the mentally ill will really appreciate it.

Teddy, I originally saw this in the movies when it first came out in 1976 {I believe that is the year} and one knew then that this is a "keeper".

CD, Thanks for citing this movie; I looked it up on my Netflix membership and it has entered my queue for future viewing! It looks very compelling indeed.

In a way, the movie almost describes the life of Peter Mamonov, who has the title roll in the movie. He plays the Saxophone and... I won't say anymore about the flick. Mamonov is a rock musician fyi...Another flick in which he acheived Russia-wide recognition is "Остров" = Island. That film has English subtitles which are really quite good at telling the story.

The last movie I watched was "Miss Potter" with Renee Zellweger. It's not new, 2006, but I liked it very much.

Via Netflix, Master and Commander: Far Side Of The World, with Russell Crowe, Billy Banks, James D'Arcy and Paul Bettany. First off, in my book, anything Russell Crowe is in can't be bad. Secondly, this is both a magnificent saga and production and all the actors are quite up to the task. What shocked me the most was seeing how young some of the recruits and officers comprising the British Navy at the time were; yet they had to become men in order to survive. Now, I shall have to look into acquiring the complete Aubrey/Martin series by Patrick O'Brian, preferably for under 100 bucks--some 20 volumes in all. I know that for the money I'm willing to spend on this, it will have to be a paperback collection. Oh, well.

On Netflix, Apollo 13, starring Tom Hanks, Ed Harris, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton and Joe Spano. I remember seeing this drama played out in "real time" as a 19 year old teenager, and never fully realized--until seeing this Ron Howard directed film--just how awfully close we came to losing these brave men. Plaudits to Howard and the cast, as well as to all the people at NASA in real life who made sure these heroes made it home safely.

Via Netflix, The Conspirator, a Robert Redford directed film about a true incident following the Lincoln murder in which a sympathetic Confederate boarding house owner named mary serraut was arrested and eventually executed by the Federal authorities for her seemingly tenuous--at best--connection to John Wilkes Booth and the conspiracy to assassinate the President. A year after her hanging, the Supreme Court ruled it illegal, smallcomfort to her! This film raises many questions still relevant in our own societies today, as we confront the vicious terrorists such as Al Qaeda and ISIS, and whether democracies will be able to survive or slide into military dictatorships in order to really effectively conduct--and, hopefully, eventually terminate--the seemingly "forever" War on Terror. Well done all around. The film features Jake McAvoy and Robin Wright in the leading roles.

Via Netflix, Gladiator {Expanded Edition}, starring Russell Crowe and Oliver Reed. I don't know if this is based on a true story or not, but in either case this is a great tale and movie. kudos all around!

Quadraphenia - Written and featuring the music of The Who
All about the Mods and the Rockers (of which I was a Mod) Features some great music and quite a good storyline about a mixed up kid trying to come to terms with the world he is growing up in.
