Amen to that Teddy; I think--as Cream so aptly put it in their song of the same name--that we were "born under a bad sign".

Because we did not have television untill I was nine, and then only BBC the only one I am familiar with was Man In A Suitcase, which I loved.

My choice is Fly Like an Eagle, The Steve Miller Band. http://youtu.be/NgfL7cixH74

Steve, One of mine is from the Willis Conover's Voice Of America radio broadcast I listened to in the fifties and early sixties. It was broadcast over short wave radio in Europe and the UK nightly. One of the best ever radio jazz shows. Once that Take The A Train theme came in it was all ears to the radio set, and being on short wave it meant sitting holding the radio switch steady or we would lose the programme.

Stu, Great music indeed. Thanks for sharing both it and your experience with it while in the service {?} {I'm guessing here}.

How about Radio Luxembourg, we all tuned into that station along with AFN.

Steve, I discovered VOA a year or so prior to army service, but I listened in all throughout army years. The billet radio was situated right above my bunk!!
Willis Conover talked slowly and clearly for the benefit of a largely non English speaking audience. Many east Europeans tuned in, illegally, and, some of them who later became jazz musicians paid tribute to the programme. In fact, many still spoke in broken English but when talking about jazz they became fluent speakers in the language when virtually talking in the slow deliberate and clear tones of Willis Conover. Great days, and swinging nights!!
Another jazz show I never missed every Friday night was 'Hot House' on AFN Munich. It was presented by 'The Baron Of Bounce', army corporal Ken Dunnagan, who talked quite a lot of GI Jive!!:) Mostly a be bop show and his intro was 'Undercurrent Blues' by Benny Goodman's Bop Band, Benny's first try at bop. I liked this track, great trumpet by Doug Mettome. Every time I hear this intro it takes me back in time. I exchanged e -mails with Ken Dunnagan a few times, about fifty years later !! Quite a guy and a good laugh. He always opened the show with, "This is the Baron Of Bounce coming right at you from the cool castle...throw all your pop records in the bin a dig the sounds of....jaaaaazzz" I once asked him if he played any instrument he replied, "Sure! I play a mean Aeolian Harp man".
No video of this show though, this is the track only.

Colin, Never really tuned in much to Luxembourg. The pop music back then didn't really appeal much to me. I would enjoy the Great American song book if sung by Ella, Sarah, Anita, June Christy, Chris Connor, etc, but didn't get that stuff much on Luxembourg. A few exceptions maybe. My wife tuned in sometimes.
For me it was mainly the Jazz radio stations, with some classical, some folk music, a bit of this and that, but I did enjoy, on AFN, the 'Hillbilly Jamboree'. :)
Gord, There has never again ever been radio quite like AFN. (great music, and...no adverts!) We were lucky to have it and hear all that great music.

It did have some Jazz but remember in those days we were limited to "The home service" "The light program" "the third program"
so for us young lads it was all we had, heck I still remember 'Dick Barton, and Paul Temple'

Jogging old memories here you lot! Dick Barton (Snowy and Jock). Paul Temple, was it the Flying Scotsman theme for that show?
I never missed a Goon Show with Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers, and listened in to the football commentaries, plus the horse racing with - was it Richard Dimbleby? or Raymond Glendening? just to find out how far a distance my horse had lost by! Boxing was popular then and The Big Fight was a must. (the last big fight I had my wife won by a flying frying pan TKO!)
I enjoyed that one Teddy and you jogged my memory as I can recall hearing it.
Any more remin...eh..iscences, if that's the right spelling!
Keeping jazz in this thread the third programme had Jazz Record Requests, and still does!
Another AFN show programme was The Big Band Show and it kicked in with this recording by Duke Ellington. After hearing this so often we got to know the solo's off by heart and scat along with them.

Benny Goodman's 'Air Mail Special Delivery' was featured a lot on AFN on the Bouncing In Bavaria radio show. It was often an extended riff at the opening and conclusion.
I have the version in my collection from The Shrine Auditorium but it isn't on you tube.
This one is a much later different version with Benny and a somewhat under recorded Scott Hamilton. But, it bounces along.
