There is a little green button below your avatar etc which says :
(your name) Is on a distinguished road,
Whats all this about ? does it ever change?

Hi Colin,

Ok - Green dot explained:
These are directly related to "reputation points", and are part of the vBulletin software application that MIMF uses.

Each member, upon registering in this forum, is given 10 Reputation Points, which shows "[member name] is on a distinguished road". If another member likes your posting, they can add to your reputation points by clicking on the icon below the green dot.

Anyone can check their own reputation points in one of two ways:
  1. Click on "User Control Panel" at top left. This opens up a screen that shows your current reputation points and who gave you the additional points, for which post, and on what date.
  2. On your own posting, click on that scale icon and a little window will appear showing how many points you currently have.
At this time though, they are not used for anything, nor will any extra privileges or statuses be granted to any member for having the most points. They may be used in future times, but I don't know for what, yet. There are many levels to these useless points ... from -100 to + 2000.

As an illustration, I just added 40 points to your "reputation power" so when you hover over your green dot it will show something different.
I just added 40 points to your count just now, so when you hover over your green dot, it now show something different.

Thanks, Colin ... my repayment or reward is just being here on this forum and enjoying my association with friends like you and everyone else on MIMF.

I do ... and having those is somewhat frightening at times ... but they are nice when it comes to dealing with spammers ... two mouse clicks and they are toast .

The one things I do not understand Lars is why we can not award points as we see fit. If we have awarded points for a particularly good thread, and the same person writes another good thread which deserves acknowledgment we can not award it. Why not? We had some very good threads on the jazz section concerning bands but we were not able to award additional points as we (or I) had awarded points for a previous thread. Sorry if this is a bit garbled but I am sure you get the idea

teddy

Hi teddy,

As an alternative to awarding points, one can "Rate" a thread ... clicking on "Rate Thread" at the top right of the first post in the thread, one can choose a value of one to five stars. When used, these will show up in the index for that forum area with one or more stars.

The amount of reward points that can be issued at one time is not something that I can change ...

We can discuss the feasibility of using them ... and we can check to see if the settings can be adjusted ... at least just for fun anyway. The vBulletin (forum software) manual has this to say about them:

The User Reputation system allows your board members to leave comments about one anothers' posts, and thereby contribute to their overall 'reputation'.

Using the User Reputation manager, you can create titles for a variety of reputation levels, so that users are given a reputation title when they reach a certain reputation level.

I do know that Frederik does not want to have different distinctions between members ... the navel ranks we use are just for fun and add some personal appeal to the place. I mean, achieving any particular "rank" within the forum does not give that user any special privileges, except for opening up previously hidden forum areas, for which there are two such forums that "appear" after a certain number of posts have been made.

I agree Lars the last thing we need is an elite group within the membership
