Hi there,

My name is Paul Frederick West, and I compose neobaroque music. I guess I'm looking for a place where I can discuss and share this kind of music in a mature setting, free from undue criticism and heavy-handed opinioning. Seems there are not too many music forums on the internet that offer this. I live in Texas, USA, and have been composing for over 25 years. I play intermediate-level classical guitar, and most all my pieces (including the concertos and other chamber works) are conceived intially on this instrument. I am a follower of Jesus Christ, and I give God glory for any talent I may possess in the realm of music. By profession, I am a Mortician and not a composer - which is a good thing; I'd starve otherwise ;)

I find contemporary baroque compostion a good method of stress-release and a way to "wind down" after work. I find the baroque idom a very large ocean and sufficiently (if not anachronistically) accomodating for a modern composer to express his or her ideas while maintaining a level of individuality. For those interested, some of my pieces can be heard on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/user/Jalapablo. I am interested to hear others' music, even if it is not baroque.

For what it's worth, I am also the co-founder of "The Society of Contemporary Baroque Composition" which is an assembly of modern composers who utilize the baroque idiom as a vehicle for their artistic expression. All skill levels are welcome, membership is free, and no one is ever discouraged from writing modernly in the baroque style: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/The-Society-of-Contemporary-Baroque-Composition/187989391214979?v=wall

I look forward to spending some time here, and getting to know many other composers. It looks like a great place.

Warmest regards,

PFW

Hello Paul,

Welcome to MIMF. I think you found just the right forum. We have a lot of friendly and knowledgeable people here.

A neobaroquist, you say? Hawk Henries must be thrilled that you joined, as he is trying to find some info on Modern Baroque. I see that you've already contributed to his thread.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Baroque, but I do enjoy writing fugues (even though I am not a composer). And not only in Baroque style. Just recently, I wrote a B-A-C-H fugue based on dodecaphonic technique. I think I posted a couple of my compositions here on the forum. They should still be there.

Anyway, hope you enjoy your time spent here.

Cheers,
Mat

Finally I became a member here. I've been listening to your music, in fact we subscribe eachother on Youtube,
but I contact you here since I cannot find your contact information. Add me on Facebook search for Roger Lindfors. I'm in Sweden.
We share the same hobby. It's really fun to bring baroque to life in the modern baroque style. My latest work is Harpsichord Concerto 2012 check it out on youtube it's very influenced by Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons, who all have become father figures in my life. I write in various styles from contemporary music. Sometimes it's rococo influenced, sometimes not that's the advantage on living in our modern world with total freedom of mind when we can write music in any style before our time. Not many can do that as I have found, but personally I have no problem with that. I dunno if it's a born talent or not, perhaps a combination of path in life, since I have walked this road for quite some time. I want to unite people with the same interest in a society. That's why I formed Collegium Musicum Artificum Novi Baroqui, which is a society for composers interested in the art of composing musikc in the contemporary style. If anyone is interested to be part of the society, then contact me. I hope people out there likes the music I compose. It's a passion I gladly share with others.

Best regards,

It's been two years and I've just "rediscovered" this site. I guess I didn't get email notification that replies had been made. I sincerely apologize for not responding to the people here who welcomed me. I would still like to reciprocate some music, if you are open to it. My email: [email protected]

Wow! This new member posting and the ensuing responses are so nice, so very nice, orchestral even,
I don't feel even slightly slighted by the memory of the wild lack of enthusiam for my freaky Jimi self.

Jalapablo! Before I can begin to say anything musical to you, I have to address you man to man.
I know what you are saying about being a mortician, and how that can become a family business.
You have my utmost respect for that.
I know the flesh of my body won't be dealt with as my Scottish ancestors would have,
putting you on a raft, setting it ablaze and sent out to sea.
Here in the Niagara Peninsula we just get cremated, even if Lakes Ontario and Erie,
and the Niagara River, are so near.
Believe me, when I river-walk across the top of Niagra Falls, always late at night in the dark,
I don't feel like making a Tarzan dive, building a generator, or taking a photo looking back to shore.
The energies of my life start to flow past me, this moving field of water energizing my static self,

and I can feel myself, my life, start to flow past me, my hair starting to stand on end,
and that makes me want to get back on land in a hurry.
I hope my ashes are scattered above Niagara Falls and over DeCew Falls.

I can understand your interst in any baroque music, and congratulations for becoming a composer,
a noble ambition.
If I was in Texas, I'd try to find ancient wood from native lodges and build my own, uh, stringed instrument.

As far as being a follower of Jesus Christ, I'll leave that for any discussion you may desire.
I call on the covenant and pray to Jesus of Nazareth.
