We are not to question the mods ?? Come on, I think discussion is healthy and democratic we may even come up with new and valuable ideas and justice must be seen to be done,
I would be surprised if Martin cussed or committed ad hom more than any other member so what dastardly sin did he commit?

Rather inclined to agree with Colin on this one. Obviously the moderators do a good job, but there is always a danger of personalities creeping into things. I have served on enough commities to be aware of the dangers. As anyone banned has made some sort of public statement I do not see the harm in informing the members what was said, even if it has to be censured to avoid further offence. The data protection act should not come into it. ( I act as date protection officer within my own company so I have some understanding of this, at least as far as English law is concerned). Open discussion is what forums are about and anything which censures opinion needs to be carefully policed, however good the intention. Who watches the watchers in effect.

I stand with Colin and Teddy on this one. Just because someone is not liked by other members should not preclude his/her right to express their opinions--however annoying the manner--on a free and open forum such as this.
Otherwise, we might just be starting down that slippery slope of censorship and repression. I understand that sometimes it's a very fine line indeed in these highly subjective matters, but I'd rather err on the side of being too "liberal" than curtailing free and open debate; as long as it does not venture into racial, religious or sexual insult. That's where my "line in the sand" is drawn.

David I do not want to get into an argument with you but if this was aimed at you personally surly you can cope with aggressive PMs ? you and Martin were at odds on various threads (as were others towards him me for example) and could have sorted it between you or put him on your ignore list, perhaps the mods could disable his PM capabilities for a spell there are many solutions abut a permanent ban to the forum is pretty final IMO of course, again this is not intended to offend, Colin

I am still not sure whether Martin had an odd sense of humour (like me) or whether there was an underlying problem. He certainly seemed unhappy a lot of the time.
Did something tip him over the edge or would this ban confirm his ( implied ) suspicions that everyone hated him.

To answer the first question, any ban on MIMF is permanent. Once a user accumulates 12 points of infractions, they are toast. Spammers are always scorched toast ... an instant ban.

To answer the Duckmeister,

In all cases we really work hard in trying to prevent a ban. Usually a gentle reminder PM from a staff member will suffice ... if not, then there are official warnings, and then if the activity continues, infractions are issued.

As I've said before, for privacy concerns, we cannot divulge the gory details of what happened leading up to any particular user being banned. That is a private matter between the staff and the member.

I don't know why Martin felt that way ... I didn't hate him. He was ... erm ... well ... uhh ... unusual, so I'll leave it at that. There is lots of space between 'unusual' and 'hate' ... And, btw, that is my own personal opinion having removed the admin hat for the moment.

Yes, Martin certainly seemed to have an unusual slant on life. It is very easy to unset someone accidentially. As I have said before we are such a wide variety of people there bound to be occassions when missunderstandings occur, humour for instance is basically cruel. There are not many jokes that do not poke fun at something or someboby. And what is funny in one countries culture may be very offensive in another. But I agree that there is no room here for deliberately insulting or attacking some one. Which brings me to the point of David claiming that I am not an idiot. My wife got VERY upset over that. Will you please ban her.
