Classics that make you cry

Right now I will say that toccata & fugue is bringing me to tears for being
so hard to learn. I've been on this piece for three months and I still can't
get it. My problem is I have a hard time reading music in the first place
and the top musicians at my church won't give me any lessons. Will I have
to learn how to play an instrument that I all ready know how to play in order
to learn how to read music. I'm like a third grader trying to read a novel
with big words in it that the third grader hasn't learned yet. I try to read
music and sometimes wind up getting lost. Is there a solution to my
problem?

Have you tried breaking the piece down - taking manuals alone, then pedal alone, RH with pedal, LH with pedal, etc.

Another method I use on really difficult pieces (just started to learn Carrillon de Westminster by Vierne comes) is to start at the beginning slowly and master the first measure - then add the 2nd measure, master those two, then proceed on to add the 3rd measure, etc etc. Painstakingly slow process, but it sure sets all the notes into the brain quickly.

Also, don't dwell on one piece for the entire practice session. Mix up the routine with some other pieces ... I always begin every practice session with something that I am very familiar with and can almost play from memory. I end my practice routine with a composition of my personal arrangement of the hymn, Come, Come Ye Saints (it's a traditional LDS hymn - yes, even a stout Lutheran like myself can enjoy hymnody from other faiths!) Try to end your practice session on a very positive note (no pun intended) instills a sense of accomplishment instead of ending in frustration.

I am amazed the staff organists of that church aren't willing to give lessons or at least give some guidance in your quest to learn organ literature. I don't have the patience to teach, but I am always willing to pass on my knowledge and experiences to those who ask.

And to keep this post 'on topic', it's that hymn (that I play from memory - and has been my standard organ prelude on All Saints Sunday) is the one hymn that causes me to become very emotional.

All music that I consider great, Schubert Sonata 17.. Bachs Toccata in E for Harpsichord. When I hear something that I think is unbeliveably great it makes me cry. But I assume you ment cry as in Sad not cry with joy or did you?

Song that make me cry

You ask about classic songs, how about some of the modern ones.
I know of one that makes me cry and it's "I can Only Imagine" by
Mercy me. The praise team at church played and sang this song
and it really had me in tears when the song touched my heart.:bawl:

Well, modern music - Tears In Heaven, Eric Clapton. Rather evident, concerning its background . And - genious song, great sound...

Another one - Fields Of Gold, Eva Cassidy. Can't explain, why, but it works.

Classical music - Choral Prelude f-moll ( J.S.Bach ) known as "Ich Ruf Zu Dir,Herr "- is absolutely unbeatable for me. I had to really fight with tears, exercising it for the first time ( version of Buzzoni for piano ). It happens over again sometimes, when I have to repeat it after a long break.

Yes, many other works of Bach, too - Johannes Passion, Sheep May Safely Graze, Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring....

I'm a christian person who enjoys jewish music once in a while and
there is one that makes me cry. It is sung by Paul Wilbur called
Arise o Lord and El Shaddi by Amy Grant that brought tears to my
eyes. They both touch my heart in a way that no other piece of
music can. Arise o lord is a song taken from Psalms 3 with one of
the verses. It's timeless.

Hi Judy,

Max Bruch wrote *Kol Nidre* for cello and orchestra which is very much inspired by Jewish music. The cello part is quite rhapsodic, imitating somewhat the *Hazzan* who chants the Liturgy in the Synagogue.

Udyret, I love that song all to pieces! I heard a song at church yesturday
that had me in tears. It was called 'I sing because I'm happy'. Tears
in heaven was popular when my mother passed away. I bawled when it
came on the radio during the funeral on my way to the cematary. You
are right about that one. I tear up now when I hear it.
