The tenor sax player sounds vaguely familiar but not sure, maybe Paul Quinichette?

The pianist also played and arranged with Goodman then with Miller in the Air force band; later went classical, studied under Paul Hindemith and headed up the music dept of a well known university.

Mel Powell! I would never have got that one Mike without the Miller and Goodman connection! Jess Stacey was the other pianist but he wasn't with Miller. Maybe it was the slow tempo that had me puzzled, but that adds interest to the fun of the game.
I very seldom check the websites as I prefer to figure out who the musicians are under my own steam.

OK guys. Here's somethng that's not been done yet (I think).

Who's the sax player? AND, extra points if you can tell me what he's playing.

Real tough Mat. I hear snatches of Blues In The Night and Winter Wonderland, and a tenor maybe a bit inflenced by Sonny Rollins.

Hey Stu. It is indeed one of Rollins' compositions, but it's not him playing.

Also, it was recorded in late 80s.

I'll have a wild guess,Mat. Joe Henderson? The tune ...hmmm...Oleo?

Nope and nope...

All his family, except for mother, plays jazz as well.

Narrows it down some Mat but can't be sure. Ill try Branford Marsalis? The tune, maybe Doxy.

Branford it is, Stu. And the tune was St. Thomas.

Mat, I admit I don't have much of Branford Marsalis. I did a check on some recordings and was impressed. I will probably download a compilation of his stuff.

I'f you'd like to hear the St. Thomas track in its entirety you should go for his 1987 album Renaissance. I've heard some of his music and liked most of it.
