Gord, great assessments indeed. Should you or I post the next song for review, or wait for another member to do so?

i love hancock and i know that it's a very popular piece, but i've always found it a bit boring.

hi colin, you say you never heard of sun ra.when you watch this video of his usual stuff, you will probably say thank god, ive never heard of him. gord

this is a video that demonstrates only why Sun ra was such a controversial musician. In his music one can find useless and ridicolous noise like this but also things of great beauty (either in traditional or experimental style). The fact that he recorded so many albums does not help to understand.
Just an example of what i mean:

hi escher,i rate the sun ra 9 out of 10,it was excellant. i am actually a fan of sun ra,at times he is performs beautiful and intense music. my remarks and video aimed at colin were made tongue in cheek, because colin has a great sense of humour, a found the most ridiculous piece of sun ra i could find, to get a laugh out of him. ifigured he would enjoy it, but not like it. now i need somebody to rate the above video. it is anita o day at newport.gord

Gord, although this genre of jazz is not my particular "cup of tea" {once again, please excuse the pun}, Anita's obvious joy at performing in this venue and her phrasings and tempo {i?} changes really carried the day {sorry!} for me. I just wish they had shown the drummer during her scat singing in "Tea For Two". Overall, a great "snapshot" as it were of an America long gone indeed. I'd give it an 8/10.
Now, to sample a different--though no less ardent--form of passion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvmJHprG_Fg

You're spot on Gord - you can soon get lost keeping up with this thread but isn't that great. Just shows how good it is.
I just missed 2 days and I'm going to work hard to catch up (see separate posts)

Cheers John

Right Gord getting back to your point - I dont think we should go for a "wait your turn process". It would be a shame to slow things down at the cost of reduced interest.

Right - my assessments of the various tracks since my last visit..

1. Sun Ra (2 by Gord and 1 by escher)
Tr 1 - I had never heard anything by this guy and my 1st reaction was. A bit weird like Monk but not bad - 7.5/10
Tr 2 - Horrific. How could a good pianist lower himself to that level? - 0/10
Tr 3 - Good music ( but the piano was just backing) 7.5/10 for the track as far as I got with it)
* i would make the note here , that if one doesn't hear the whole thing out you'll never know what might be about to happen and I'm afraid that applies to me in this case. I must try to hear it all, if posts slow down a bit)
2. The Cannonball track. I dont think anyone can try to directly compare such quite different instruments.
However my view of the track is that I was knocked out by cannonball's performance. I Have had doubts but in this case I give him 9.5/10
3. Anita. Everybody probably knows that i love Anita and her presentation here shows the excellence of her voice and phrasing BUT I totally dislike this arrangement of a classic tune. (Again I didnt hear the 2nd part but I dont care much for scat) 7/10.
4. Steve's track by McCoy Turner. - He aint a favourite of mine I give it 6/10

Cheers John

Since John didn't seem to post any links, it's back to Steve's McCoy Tyner track.

I've not heard too many McCoy's recording but those I heard so far didn't really impress me. Just as this one. The patterns he used in left hand throughout his solo got kind of boring after a while. I rate it 5/10. Not his biggest fan, I guess...

Here's a Haden-Barron duet. The drummer can sometimes be redundant.

Having now had a bit of time to go through the offerings here, I nust say that Sun Ra, and McCoy Tyner didn't last beyond 30 seconds, so I won't rate them, not my scene so I'll leave rating them to those that do listen to them. Cannonball again not one of my preferred artists, but listenable 5/10, Anita I think I'd need to listen to that a bit more, it might grow on me, 6/10. Teagarden yes 8/10, Herbie Hancock 7/10

Try this for size.

I seem to have a problem posting a vid, so please googlevideo Lonette Mckee singing Gershwin's "How long has this been going on", which she so heartrenderingly interprets in the film "Round Midnight" from 1986, directed by Bernard Tavernier. What a crush I had on her........Soooooooo beautiful........

Think I prefer the Marty Paich Moanin to the Art Blakey, 8/10 for Art

Here's another pianist

For CD, your Lonette track, personally not so keen on jazz vocals, but she is good so 8/10
