gord, back at you for the Trane piece--10/10. Not only was Trane great on this, but I loved Garland's piano vamps and the steadiness of the rhythmn section comprised of Chambers and Taylor. Most excellent! Now try another stomper from one of the greatest sax players and groups ever--at least in my humble opinion; if this doesn't get you to stand up and start moving and clapping your hands, then I doubt anything will: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJgadY99m48&feature=related

Onto page 6 already.
I'm gone for a week and I have a mountain to climb to catch up.

Mat - Charlie Haden - 7
Mike - Marty Paich - 8
Steve - Art Blakey - 9(It might seem odd for me but i really like his groups)
Gord - Oliver Nelson - I reserve judgement till I hear it again)
Mike Ralph Sutton - 9 (I'm a fan)
Mike - Lonette McKee - 6.5 (not in my top list)
Escher - Red Allen - 10 (Red can do no wrong for me)
Gord - Anthony Perkins - 5 (Not in my top list)
Mat - Kuba Badach - 5(Sorry Mat, not for me)
Mike - G Shearing - 5 (I love the guy but could this be rated as Jazz?)
Steve - Wayne Shorter - 3 (Shudder)
Escher - Dave mcKennon - 4.5 (wouldn't make my top 20)
Mike - Nat Gonella - 9 (I've always rated him for entertainment - OK he takes off Louis but he's good at it)
Mike - Dutch Swing - 7 I rate them but this is below par)
Mike - Buddy Rich - 7.5 (One of my top rated drummers but this isn't the best swing track I've heard by him)
Gord - Lee Morgan - 8.5 (I've decided that I like Lee Morgan after being dubious for some time)
Steve - Cannonball - 8.5 (He's getting well up in my regard)
Mike - Woody Herman - 6 (One of my top swing outfits but this lets him down a bit)
Escher - Pee Wee - 9 (How I love that totured clarinet)
Gord - sonny Clark - 8 (IT gets the mark for the trumpet solo by Donald Byrd)
Steve - miles Davis - 9 (all for the Miles solo, Coltrane?, well you all know my feelings for him - yuck)

Cheers John
hope to catch up tomorrow

In spite of the guitar's presence in this piece, overall I found it to be very melodic and with a good ebb and flow; I liked the tone and technique of the man on tenor sax, of whom I've never heard before. I'd rate it a 7.5/10.
Here's one of my all-time favorites on the same instrument: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld-9MZ9Xezs

I don't usually go much for vocals in my jazz, but this was pretty good; I especially liked the piano playing on it. For me, it's a 7/10. Now listen to a stripped down version of the same song by another master of the sax: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0o1IaY_1js&feature=related. To my way of thinking, this version better captures the very "soul" and essence that I believe the composers wanted--and so smoooooth and mellow!

Overall, I'd give the Krall piece an 8/10. I liked the interplay and the riffing between her piano and the drummer--great with the brushwork--but I'm still not sold on the electric guitar being a part of a jazz group. I'm also really not that much into vocals, even though she does have an extraordinarily sexy and sultry voice. She's not hard on the eyes either. Anyway, getting back to more familiar territory for me, please assess this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhFDVFyIPeY&feature=related

Nope, not to my liking at all. 4/10.

This piece comes from Thomas Crown Affair movie. 10/10 in my book. How 'bout you?
