• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

    Many kind regards

Thank you! Four excellent pieces and performances. Loved it. I must say, though, that I am somewhat irked by those who go to the trouble of posting videosand giving some information on the composer and music and fail to identify the orgnist or the organ.

About three years ago I found and purchased in a store about 30 miles from where I live in Massachusetts a 5 CD boxed set titled English Organ Anthology from Stanley to Wesley played by Jennifer Bate on a variety of period organs on various parts of England from which I have much enjoyment. I have found many unusual items here. The shop specialises in cut out and discontinued NEW recordings, mostly classical but some Jazz and a few others. They do have a web site.

I have that Jennifer Bate CD, Glorious! I did browse through that to identify composers that I then fed into Youtube, is that cheating? :D

Actually it is a bit comical history with these "Otto Winter" recordings. The name "Otto Winter" is purely fictional, invented by a German record company to appeal better to German cd buyers. The organist was really Miklós Spányi, a Hungary-born Finnish organist. He had recorded Bach's works on a Hungarian organ that had been built in the style of a German baroque organ. The Hungarian recording company Hungaroton had sold the recordings to this German company, that changed the organist's name and the organ became a Silbermann. The organist told this history in a Finnish organ magazine. More info about the organist: http://miklosspanyi.de/

Hi FV !!

Once more you're full of invaluable info :)
Helluva story !
The point is that I got some CDs from Miklos Spanyi, with his name and info printed on !
Now I'll have to change the name on the German ones.......

Thanks for the link

I did ... and these are wonderful. I've grown to have much more appreciation for the English (UK) built pipe organs since having heard a number of them last summer. They are so delightful to hear ... and in the case of Wimborne Minster, very delightful to play as well.

PS, here's an alternative just for the fun of it ! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTblcWzIXww&feature=related
enjoy

Panos, Thank you for posting this delightful performance. As much as I love the organ the Virginal is a refreshing alternate. Byrd's music is always a delight especially when played that well and that instrument is gorgeous both to hear and see.

My favourite Harpsichord work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kVHYNEmoSA&feature=related I did try to do an arrangement of this for GrandOrgue, must revisit it and try some different registrations now that I've improved my understanding of controlling the organ from the MIDI files, also having some more suitable stops.

Thank you Mike,

Easy to understand why it is your favorite, especially played by Pinnock. Should be interssting on the organ, good luck.
