I've also just returned from holiday and give my comments on the offerings missed.

Marcus Roberts - I hadn't heard him before - interesting but not quite my style.
Lee Morgan - Is the whole disc as good as this? - If so I want it.
Tatum/Webster - great music from 2 superstars.
Tatum - The guy was a great soloist.
Dorsey Jam session - Fabulous

hi john, love the shorty rogers, i have all his albums except for the very hard to find shorty rogers meets tarzan on mgm. there really is an album by that title, it is a soundtrack from about 1963 and is a latin big band. the pete jolly, a master piano craftsman at work, great stuff.

this musician was actually my favorite jazz piano in 1960. gord

This piece is from1967, and represents what jazz is really capable of when it is played with passion, focus and sheer artistry. The effects that Nat Adderly coaxes/produces from his cornet still blows my mind--pun fully intended-- to this day. Why this never--at least to my knowledge--became a mega-hit, like The Work Song or Mercy, Mercy, Mercy--has always befuddled me; perhaps because of its length?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmpV67Mgsl0&playnext=1&list=PL726D05D858CF356A

Gord , Steve, teddy,

All excellent music ;
Gord - I've never previously heard anything by Les McCann and I'm greatly impressed - how did I miss him?
teddy - I would have preferred the 2nd beautiful E.S.T. track without the orchestra - the trio is the truly lovely part.

Cheers John

john, the art pepper is a jazz classic.regardingthe organ, i would say it qualifys as a jazz instrument. i am not a great lover of the organ in jazz, but i have a few records by some of the top stars like jimmy smith and wild bill davis that i occationally listen. the other question, that is probably latin, it has a bossa nova feel to it. gord

I ask 2 main questions about this next piece.

1. Does the organ qualify as a jazz instrument?
2. Is this type of latin music jazz?
Judge for yourseles but let me know.

Cheers John

To my way of thinking--and listening--the organ is a beautiful instrument that doesn't belong in the jazz genre.
I would characterize the piece you posted as falling into the category of bossa nova lite {and very lite at that}. I would not consider it to be jazz music--IMHO, of course. This is jazz--at least to me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8MLRuFCtF0
