Teddy, I had a listen to the two JM&HH tracks you posted. Quite honestly, I thought Joni's singing in both cases was laid-back, waaay too laid-back, IMO. Fortunately, there were Herbie and Wayne (and this other guy on soprano in the first track) to save the day.

I will have to look for MINGUS with Shorter on soprano.

Actually, on this ^^ recording Jean is not playing oboe but cor anglais (also referred to as English horn, which paradoxically is neither English nor a horn). Still, he's great with both instruments. I've recently posted a track of his on rate the jazz piece thread.

About clarinet - well, maybe it's because it's often used in dixieland context, which I'm not too fond of.
