• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

organ is my drug

Organ playing is like a drug. I can't wait the end of the day to go to practice. I count hours left till the end of the work. When I'm away from my organ for several days, I get nerveous, like a smoker without his cigarettes. I'm sad the day I can't rehearse, and awfully happy if I can do it twice a day. At work, I have Bach's Trio Sonatas hidden under other sheets of paper. At home, music sheets are just beside the door, ready to go :) Some days ago, I could not find Mr Boivin in the computer's list, because I typed his name with y - Boyvin, like organ-composer.
Any remedies to this illness?

Seems to be a harmless addiction. Why can't you practice every day? Have you acquired that nasty habit of sleeping. It eats into a lot of valuable time. Bur seriously, keeppracticing and someday you may be able to give up that nasty job and become a full-time organist. Good luck.

I guess it's kind of my drug too. When I play the organ in my flat it blocks out all the cr*p in my life, for an hour or two at a time. It transports me away into another dimension.

I would tend to believe that all organists feel this same way ... playing is an addiction that we all love to no end. I wish I could practice at the organ everyday, but the daily roundtrip to church and back is almost 30 miles and takes 45 minutes driving time each way (all city streets - no motorways). I do have a piano at home, and use that quite frequently.

My practice sessions at the church are something that I really look forward to each week - if I lived closer, I would go there every day. I have mentioned before how, when improvising, I get into this trance with the instrument and the pipework ... I become part of it, and breathe with it ... it's an addicting experience that fills my heart with so much joy and inspiration.

Hello, my name's Matt and I'm a practice-holic. It's been 18 hours since my last practice. I desperately need more, it's too hard to stop. It's the only way I can deal with the drudgery of everyday life. Time becomes immaterial and practically non-existent when I'm practicing, it's probably the most wonderful, uplifting form of escape, it's ...

excuse me, there's somewhere I need to be right now!

I don't get as much practising done now as I did before because of demands on my time. But when I do it is the ultimate "high."

These are the best moments of the day. To enter to the empty church and put the hand on the keys. I did not feel the same for the piano - I like to play piano, but not to practice it. For organ it's different - I enjoy practicing, playing, everything. I'm glad to see other "organ-sicks" here.
