• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

Converting M-Audio Keystation 61 and 49es to a two manual console for Hauptwerk etc

Hi!

That's nice. I've forgotten to write about it, but on my VPO page I've updated the manual section with a new page about my new manual stack that's created from M-Audio Keystations (61 es).

For anyone interested you'll find it on http://www.familjenpalo.se/vpo/new-manuals. I also hope it's useful for others planning such a project.

Kind regards

Thanks for the great info guys !

Lars, There's a link to your site from Mostyn's page !! :) : a Swedish 3m.

The problem with M-Audio 61 & 49 is that they do not sypport continuous controller (for swell), just sustain.
The best way is to get the more expensive 88es that does and use 56 of its keys for a more classical aproach.

I'm planning to use two CME 49 USB keyboards on something very similar. These support both sustain and continuous pedals.

Ah, I forgot : Mostyn, why don't you use the USB ports ??!!! instead of classic midi ones. They are faster and easy with computers.

Best
Panos.

PS. I'm also planning to get myself the latest Nord 27notes pedalboard along with its swell pedal. Creating my own (following your excellent work, Mostyn) seems a long task...

Hi!

That's right that there's no in jack for external expression. One solution is to make use of the volume slider connection (to a foot expression pedal). There's a good post on the hauptwerk forum for making the connections here.

The modulation wheel also can work as a swell control... One would just need to figure out a way how to control it from a foot pedal!

I've went for another solution, namely a FCB1010 that I'll build into the front of my pedal. Then I'll have two expression pedals and some toe studs to use! I'll post more about it later.

Kind regards

Lars P

Hi Panos,
I am using the MIDI cables instead of USB because I started out with two midi keyboards that didn't have USB connections. I do now have a USB cable which came with the 61es but will have to buy another to go with the 49 key Evolution. The final assembly will use USB. I can't see how to use the volume sliders or wheels as swell pedal sensors in Hauptwerk. They didn't work 'out of the box' with either Hauptwerk or Miditzer. Currently the player just uses the volume control on the audio and the mouse to click the swell and crescendo pedals.

I hope Lars didn't mind me putting a link to his excellent website. I felt I should give him credit and let others see his work.

Making a pedalboard is easier than you think, but you do need the right tools.

Regards to all,

Mostyn

Hi!

I sure don't mind you linking to my webpage! That's just fine!

Unfortunately my experience with Hauptwerk is close to zero, but with GrandOrgue you just rightclick on the swell shoe you want to control and click on listen for event and move the volume slider (or modulation wheel) that you want to control the swell with, then it will be found and set (I believe that such a feature is implemented in HW 4). :)

But it's better to connect an external pedal to the connection to the main board like in the link above to Hauptwerk forum if one really wants to use the volume feature to control the swell.

Kind regards

Lars P

Many thanks, Lars. I'll experiment further. It seems easy enough to make an external pedal using the slider control as a sensor and extending the wiring as per the link you gave me. If I find anything useful, I'll post again. I must check out HW4.

Kind Regards,

Mostyn

Hi Lars, Mostyn,

As a VPO maniac (......) I 'm using any one of them ! I just wanna know all about them !!
GrandOrgue, jOrgan, HW, Midiger, also have some beauties for Kontakt 4... he he.
Even I've made some sets for Engine 2, SampleTank 2.5.5 and UVI workstation 1.1.7, Shortcircuit 1 and the powerful Linuxsampler (for Windows).
The secret with all those samplers to be controlled is called : jOrgan ! (as midi relay, not as standalone VPO with fluidsynth).

Mostyn you got to upgratde to HW4 if you want total performance control. This midi learn feature is a killer !
ANY CONTROLLER CONTROLS ANYTHING ON THE LOADED SET ! - and it works simple and fast.
If you're working as VSTi there are many different ways now with 4... But it's all in the manual !!

Lars I would like to see this setup ! Must be inspired !!

Have fun

Hi Panos,

Thanks for the suggestion that I upgrade to HW4. Lars said the same. I am in the process of trying to decide what PC to drive it all with. It is a practice organ, not for performance, so I don't need the ultimate, just something that will do a good job with HW4, 2 manuals and pedalboard. I'm working on making a swell pedal using the M-audio slider as the sensor.

Having fun,

Hi Mostyn,
Good this with the cat :)

HW programm can be operated in low profile computers indeed. Provided you will not load BIG stuff.
In my son's small 10' screen Acer lap with win7 64bit, Intel Celeron 1.3GHz (!!!) and 2GBram, 280GB HDD at 5.900rpm, there are some good free sets performing with no problem ! about 1.5GB -HW4's free version limit and no clicks, nothing, exept of course the 250polyphony limit.
So you see.

I'm using HW4 with my 64bit win7 lap, Intel Dualcore T4400 at 2.2GHz, with 4GBram and 360GB HDD at 5.900rpm. On this there's plenty of room for a good performance and now-days, as it's getting older, you can find a similar for 350~400 euros here.
It is connected with a 2m/p Yamaha organ as controller with ROMIO II midi to USB interface (30euros).

Hope I gave you some more info for your quest!

Hi Panos,

Very helpful and reassuring. Many thanks for taking the time to respond. Should all be finished by the end of July, I hope!

Best Wishes,

Mostyn

You're very welcome Mostyn !

I'll read the good news, end of July, from Skopelos island !
Wish you the best

Hi Folks,

I said I would report back on setting up Swell controls. I have just taken the volume sliders out of the two keyboard controller cases and put them into the panel with the three octave and editing keys. Once configured as Swell and Crescendo in HW4 they give finger control at console level (using the space provided by the 49 key board over the 61). This leaves the simple option to rewire them to a foot actuated slider or rheostat of same resistance. My client is happy with the way it is. Next step is a touch screen monitor. Any recommendations out there?
