Hi,
I would love to purchase a banjo for my husband's upcoming birthday but I need help in choosing one!
He really loves blues music and has a number of different guitars including a dobro, a fender and a les paul. He likes playing acoustic guitars as well.
He was mentioned about buying a banjo in the past so would love to surprise him with one but I really don't want to go into a shop and be bambozzled with sales guys so I thought I would ask the other experts!
So any advice for me please?!
Money wise I don't want to spend more than £150 and I think he would prefer a one that is closed in the back (excuse my ignorance please!).
Cheers x

Welcome to our forum

What I know about banjo's could fit on a postage stamp. Wikipedia has an excellent article on the Banjo and explains the different types available, all good reference material for reading up on.

Hello maura and welcome to the forum. What a thoughtful wife. Do you have any sisters. :D
Have you tried Googling BANJO. Lars idea about Wiki is obviously a good one. Like him my knowedge of the banjo is limited to watching DELIVERANCE. Sorry I cant help

This is just an idea - Dean Guitars makes a banjo that is 6-strings, and is tuned just like a guitar. Since he's a guitar player he might really like it. The quality is really nice and they look beautiful.

Here's a link to it: http://www.onlineguitarsource.com/products/Dean-BW6-Folk-Series-Backwoods-Six-String-Banjo-5036.html

There's a video on the page so you can check it out. I sell them at my music shop, and people really like them. They're unique, and really fun for guitar players, like myself.

But of course, if he wants to actually learn to play a real 5 string banjo, Gold Tone makes some nice ones that I'd suggest checking out. I don't sell them but I've played them before and they're pretty nice!
