• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

GigaStudio use for organ sound generation

HOW

New member
If anyone has an interest in using GigaStudio (Tascam sold Giga) as a virtual organ software package here is what you should be aware of. Using Post Instruments fine samples of cathedral pipe organs the quality are very good. But you might equalize to correct for the natural reverberation spikes and dips. Unless you have a very fast computer (GigaStudio 3 Orchestra) you should only load one patch or midi channel with a particular stop combination. Then use midi program change messages generated by pistons or crescendo pedals to change the stop combinations. I tried to select stops by routing each of 16 channels (loaded with different stops) to stop tabs assigned to each midi channel but if more than one stop was selected, the computer could not keep up. However, since stop combinations were used, I decided to use a single midi channel assigned to a single alterable stop. Then by using multiple pistons various stop combinations could be selected using only one stop tab or draw knob.

Hi Stan,

Like gigastudio there are today Linuxsampler (also for windows with gig, sf2, sfz formats loading), Kontakt 4 (many formats import), Independence 3 pro suite, Engine 2, shortcircuit 1, SampleTank 2 and so on.

All those samplers work with modules and the best way to handle all those modules live from your keyboard, especially with organ stops presets is the one and only..... jORGAN !!!!

Gigastudio was unstable so it ended without glory. Its gig files though can be played GREAT with Linuxsampler and Kontakt.
Linuxsampler is better cause it plays them as they are (- K4 imports them and converts then in NI format).

My special custom organ is just like this :

Reaper/Linuxsampler as VSTi/Lexicon PCM native/jOrgan controller (4 ports of 16midi channels each)/physical organ console (midi/USB).

Hello Panos,
Thank you for your reply. Yes, it seems like Giga is only stable with one channel input. It seems as if much of the instability is caused by not being able to handle the increased midi data with more than one channel. I would like to use Linux for operating system(s) but I am ignorant regarding this OS. I tried using Ubuntu Linux but I could not seem to get GrandOrgue for Linux to load. I keep receiving error messages.
Best regards,
Stan

PS. If you have time could you elaborate more one your use of Linuxsampler with jOrgan etc. What version of Linux do you use and is it stable? One reason I prefer hardware samplers is because of
computer lock ups.

Hi Stan,

LinuxSampler is available for Linux, Windows and OS-X operating systems. Go to http://download.linuxsampler.org/packages/win32/snapshots/ and get the latest snapshot (linuxsampler_20110715_setup.exe at the time of writing this). This is for 32bit and 64bit systems. Let us know what version of Windows you're running and if you have an ASIO driver for your soundcard.

Kind regards,

Hi Stan,

I'm not using Linux OS (yet! - but too old for new stuff for computers = I just need them to do what I want to make music and fast now-days, no time to waiste....)

I'm just on windows from 1992 onwards. Now its win7 64bit.

So Linuxsampler FOR WINDOWS !! = here you get the latest version :

http://download.linuxsampler.org/packages/win32/snapshots/

setup : download latest official version of jOrgan 3.13 (3.14 is beta) here :

http://sourceforge.net/projects/jorgan/files/

there's also a 64bit version of 3.13.

Now all you have to do is to use jOrgan without its main engine (Fluidsynth) and replace it with Linuxsampler.
jOrgan has the apropriate extension inside and loads the apropriate .lscp file you may create (=your preset in LS).

I'm just using Reaper and LS as VSTi to get the Lexicon reverb and to be able to record limitlessly and more pro than with the included in jOrgan midi recorder (which works great too).

Another option is to use Jack 1.9.7 (or 1.9.8 experimental for both 32 & 64 bit windows) and mix any audio you want.

Get more info here :

Hello,
I have been using WinXP but I still favor Win98se except it won't run multiple processor cores. Anyway, after experimenting with GigaStudio more, the main instability noted is that it intermittently jumps to program or patch #1 from any other patch change. I am using Hlabs stops midi board with the version jumpers set to select midi program change. The inputs are wired to spare solo division console pistons. Thank you for the information about Linux Sampler. I have a computer set up for dual boot WinXP and Ubuntu Linux. It seems like the Linux sampler loads in windows but not in Linux. I guess I need to play with it more. My original intent was to play each GigaStudio voice and direct the analog outputs into another PC set up to record in order to maintain the release triggers. For some of the samples I will need to check the license to see if this is allowed although it would seem that if the samples will not play properly with the Gig sampler, one should be able to modify them in order to use them.
Best regards,
Stan
