time and distance in music

This is a little odd, but then agian I'm not a huge fan of way out contemporary classical music (think cat running up and down piano keyboard).

However, I saw a tempo indication on a vile looking saxophone piece which states:

4 cm equals 1 second.

How odd!

For Yanks and Canadians, 4 cm = just under 2 inches.

I wonder if they mean you to measure a 4cm length of the score and that will be played in 1 sec ???????????????

Perhaps they have not heard of Metronome markings.

So that works out at 0.072k per hour not even a largo, I do remember when I first started music I was told a certain piece was Forty

Designating time by means of distance has been a very ordinary part of music notation for many decades. You play everything within a certain space within a certain amount of time. Perfectly normal. You are living in 2011, after all. I suppose you have also heard of Wii and iPhones. (Both of which have been used to control and manipulate sounds for music, just by the way.) This business of mocking perfectly ordinary things that you just happen to not be familiar with does nothing to the things, you know, but it does make you look very silly.

Very strange, I have never seen something like this - but do the spaces between the notes respect the true duration of them?

Oh for goodness sake man it is not the way things are done today or the last few hundred years in normal music, but I can well believe it would be a gimmick in your kind of music :p

contra,

I was appealing to your higher self. Wow, now it`s me who looks silly!

jhc,

Your comment is short, but will take a bit of unpacking.

It is the way many people have been doing things for quite some time now. Just because those people (and that world) are unfamiliar to you means only that that world is unfamiliar to you. OK.

´Gimmick´ is a loaded term. Why gimmick? Why not just a way to accomplish a particular goal?

And why my kind of music? You marginalize it by personalizing it to me, just me? Hmmmm.

Space! Time and distance in music? Okay. But creating space is where it's at, between your ears.
When I put those stereo headphones on, I want musical movements moving all around that space.

"Your comment is short but will take a bit of unpacking". Nice!

Luddite? I held my first computer guitar this year, smashed and thrown in a ditch.
I didn't try to tune it up.

"Mocking perfectly ordinary things"?
Maybe I should quit putting down the new Tesla statue at Niagara Falls.

You are quite right it is unknown to me would you please show a score where this is used and explain why this method is used.

Well I put it (gimmick) in the same category as the sound effects used in certain music which you promote

Just a generalisation I should have been more specific but not being a follower of this music I could have used the wrong term, but you know very well to what I am referring.
