• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

I have stopped riding bikes. I came to realise that I no longer bounce very well and as modern bikes no longer have crash bar fittings a spill tends to be expensive. But thanks for the memories.

What a sweet ride Br. Colin - Don't you still ride an iron? I would gladly hop on in to the nearest "duck" dealer and ride away with the 999R if but for my family........I wanna be around for my wife and beloved children.............

If someone wants "change" I'm here to help:grin::grin::grin:

Well I have a $50 note. Could I have please have a $20, two $10s and two $5s? :D

Isn't "Wanganui" a wonderful word? It's one of those "on the edge" type words, you know, the sort to elicit a chuckle from a Yr 7 class (like "Wankel Rotary Engine").

Hey Soubasse, please don't knock the Wankel - I had a triple rotor in my Mazda Rx-8 which sang like a Formula One on Track Day when I pulled away from a Porsche 911.

The only trouble with the Wankel was the precision engineering required, too much latitude for error <!!!!!> same as Obama perhaps???

Biggest problem with the rotary engines was wear on the pistons. they needed changing too often due to seal wear. Apart from that it was, or is a wonderful piece of engineering

After I bought my RX-8, I replaced the factory seals on the rotors with special order carbon seals - I never had any problems - And I changed oil and filter every thousand kilometers. I keep on telling people: If the factory recommends an oil change every 3000 miles, then change it at 1500 miles - you'll do your engine and yourself a big favor........

Its the filters that do all the work these days CD. Some of the old London buses had done 100,000 miles without an oil change. Just regular filter changes with a special micro filter, so I am told. Not suggesting that would be a good idea on a high performance car or bike.

Ehmmmm... sorry to interrupt again...... Didn't Fokker Triplanes had Rotary Engines too ??!! (in 1917...) Red Baron made some change with his red one... !!!!!

One of the advantages of the Wankel was its smoothness due to the fact that it was rotary and not reciprocating it has no pistons just rotors and from memory Norton used it in one of their bikes I don’t know how successful that was?

I believe several early planes used rotary engines firstly around 1908. They had good power to weight ratio and were not prone to overheating. But no one has yet come up with a perfect design and erradicated the inherent faults. The boxer engine is probably the best overall design and having a low profile helps keep the weight low down in the car. But being a Porsche and Volkswagon beetle fan (the original air cooled one) I may be a teeny bit biased.
