Ok,

Who are the top three Jazz musicians/arrangers/composers past and present?

Suggestions:

1. Scott Joplin
2. Fats Waller
3. Duke Ellington

More Jazz...

Darn it!!!

I almost forgot two seminal instrumentalists: Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays

Well, that is very hard to say

Pat Metheny is great in my opinion but I don't feel he is on the same level as for instance Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.

Armstrong will probably always be my favourite

By the way, when speaking of Pat Metheny, some of his non-jazz works are real treasures!! I can recommend the instrumental track Sueno Con Mexico which is more or less ambient/chill in terms of musical style..... great stuff!

Rune,

Sueno Con Mexico is a great track. Another great track is *If I Could* from the album First Circle - Pat Metheny shows himself to be a poet of the acoustic guitar.

Re: More Jazz...

This is a tough one, but not only did he have his on style of playing, he in fact invented the style of Rag Time so for me it has to be Scott Joplin. I think I'm also right in thinking that he also wrote an opera and was the first African American to compose one.

Hello,

Scott Joplin's opera is entitled "Treemonisha". I saw it once in New Orleans.

Re: More Jazz...

Geez, I never knew he did operahs, I play his entertainer, the complicated version, that I have played far too many times, and now I am sick of it!!!!but thats really good rag there, he was definetely the master of rag, but if you look at his difficulties, his father being a slave, he did really well. But operahs???
I would never have thought.

Hi Gareth,

Yes, Scott Joplin composed an opera, but it was his only one. If my memory serves me, it was the last work he did before dying of a certain venereal disease.

Sad, that such a giant in music was cut down in relatively young years.

Peace Always,

Giovanni

Yeah, just like Mozart, who knows what these composers could have created in a few years time, pitty though, yeah, thats why I haven't heard of the operah being it the only one he created, well, thats interesting.

Re: More Jazz...

Thank you Giovanni that was an interesting read. Is it good fun to play his music? It looks like fun when I have watched pianists play his music.

Re: More Jazz...

I can`t speak for everybody, but I find it can be rather exhausting! Especially if it`s a long rag...the hands are constantly bouncing around (especially the left one) doing octaves and one should be in pretty good shape to do it justice...but yeah, it`s fun to play; it`s fun music!

Re: More Jazz...

Hi bainsk8,

It is really fun music and I get so relaxed playing it. I would like to share that as day-in and day-out music it would be self-defeating, sorta like a narcosis - will do no good the longer you stay *drugged up*. Thats why I'm also for the music of the classical masters - helps to put everything into perspective.

Cheers,

Giovanni

Re: More Jazz...

I tell you, playing his music is awesome, so lively and bright, I should probably learn some more of his rags, like maple tree rag.

Re: More Jazz...

Um, sorry to nitpick, but are you sure you don`t mean Maple 'Leaf' rag, Gareth?
