Stu, he is known for often playing his tunes on a prepared piano, so strumming might very well be what he was doing at the beginning of this track.

If I could just add a little to the thread, John the clip: 'Lekverk 21st' cent was not too bad to my ears but how about so called free form Jazz?? here is Jazzlab.
If you notice in the personnel listing they include a 'composer' now I am not sure in what capacity he serves the group but what do you make of the music

Hi Colin,
I found that incedibly awful.
If thats what is coming I am glad I wont have too much longer to suffer it.
I'm heading back to the pre-1960s

THIS is worse. And don't say I didn't warn you!

As tempting as it is, I will not comment on their band name. Or... No, I won't.

Jeeez Mat it's getting really cool  just where is music heading?

Free jazz gig on Jazz Festival in Thessaloniki September 2008
I copied this link from another forum.

This is known as Free Jazz. I just don't get it.To me it is a shambles. I think a lot of to days music Classical and Jazz has lost its way, For me I insist on a good rhythmic beat and a structured form I.e. chord sequence, and a recognisable melody is for me essential.

Colin, I couldn't agree more. Here's a post of mine from one of Mike's threads, in which he posted something similar these vids above.

I was through with the clip after 10 seconds. It was inevitable that jazz would eventually go that direction, just as classical music did. Don't think I'll ever be able to accept that fact.

So do I.

I think we might have highjacked John's thread a little. Let's get back to more... conventional jazz, shall we?

Here's a song from a 2003 album recorded by Michael Bublé:

In my lifetime Jazz was at it's best in the 50 and early 60's but I am biased lol, some of the groups lasted through the 80's I think

Thanks Mat and Colin for managing to convince me to stick to my own preferred pre-60s jazz
(and post 60s equivalents.)
Perhaps the thread should be re-named "Nightmare Jazz" and be forgotten about.

I think it was clarinettist Kenny Davern who once quipped, after hearing some extreme 'free jazz'--"sounds like a fire in a pet shop!"

Very well described and the same could be said about some avant garde classical

I think I am basically '20s to '60s, but it is possible to find later music based on that era which is pretty good.
You've got to spend time hunting for it.
However some of the stuff you gents have been showing as "new" music as per my thread is pretty horrific
and there is no way I will be going there. It makes Charlie Parker sound OK.

OK john I will concede the 60's some good stuff came out of that.
